In 2023, we continued to see threats that impact SRHR progress, and yet in the face of these challenges we also saw important advances. CIFF worked with partners to close the funding gaps for family planning, strengthen government ownership of SRHR, and improve access to self-managed contraception, HIV self-testing and access to quality safe abortion or post-abortion care. As put by our Executive Director for SRHR Miles Kemplay, although the scale of the issues we face far outweigh the current solutions available - we are able to see progress & we can demonstrate alongside partners that rapid change is possible. Ganizani Mwale Evans et al, the findings are insightful and confirm what we may state anacdoctally. That age bracket that takes alcohol and engages in sexual activity speaks of the reasons we have seen a spike in HIV and STI infections recently in Zambia. This has an implication on all HIV programmes that contribute to the 95-95-95 targets. While I read your paper, I kept wondering what the push and pull factors could actually be in the relationship between intoxication and contraception choices. Is there lessened ability to negotiate safer sex practices among students other than opting for the emergency contraception? What is the availability of other contraception choices and social acceptance among students ? What is the socio economic status of the students that engage in sexual activity? Who is their typical sexual partner, is it anyone that can afford or they have semi permanent partners? etc etc. Once again, this is a good paper with great insights that can inform other works. I totally agree with your recommendations too! Keep up the good works for the seek of population health in our country ( Zambia) and beyond.
