Marx started from the notion that human subjectivity is an active material force carried by individual consciousness but rooted in the responding body, which in turn enmeshed in the culture and relationships of social reality of which it is part. Therefore, Marxism starts from the view that the key activity is the production of the substance of the people of the world. It is the use value of products, the food and water, the clothing and shelter, the reproduction of children through sex, upbringing and education, the maintenance of health and the manufacturing processes and transport, which are most important. The subjective life of the mind and of the spirit are dependent on the bodies and the cultural capital of the people involved. However, they exist at the same time as the activities, relationships, and means, and in dialectical relationship to them.

THE EXTINCTION OF DEMOCRACY
I don't think that there is any place in the world that democracy (in the original sense of Athenian democracy) is practiced today. Practically what is contemporarily obtainable is political democracy, and as such it produces politicians who systematically play politics with the system and future of the society and the citizenry.
