A very illuminating read. Helps to understand what is and has been going on in US politics (and society) a lot - especially shedding light on underlying dynamics and developments. Especially enlightening: the partisanship that exists these days, and how it came about. By Steven Levitski and Daniel Ziblatt. First published in 2018 - still very relevant.

My Communication with George Beebe, CIA Director on Russia (formerly) Too many top Washington insiders seem to have a preference for aggression, well beyond most political analysts. In this context above, good talk with Glenn Diesen. But I think most of CIA and other such political analysts are too devoid of understanding the priorities of (US) corporate force behind wars and/or very " shy" to express such and especially publicly. Or to talk about the convenience of war to many businesses. I see BlackRock, Raytheon, Lockheed, Chevron etc well positioning or well positioned for endless war. What I do like about QI (Quincy Institute), it does not seem so bought out by such corporate entities but has strong connections to let us say the better informed at CIA, too often insufficiently utilized by certain lead politicians in Washington? Indeed it is much about money that also makes many in Congress jingle. How long can such an excessive orientation last with such massive US government indebtedness - we shall see. The inflection point can be as simple as water freezing of the Rhine at least that led significantly of the end of the main Roman Empire. The question for your analysts is what and when such an inflection point will occur for the US "empire" It is not so much to happen soon. But that the question is increasingly being asked can make Washington and friends worry much more, no doubt. And that BRICS is looking evermore relevant to make the question light up. America neocons by such worries will not wait around for the answer. Thus the prediction World War III as US hawks see it as a preventive measure to BRICS ascending. They are counting on Putin not using nukes and getting China before they think China will get them. This is excess paranoia but serves its purposes to overarm and make certain corporates jingle. War is the best way to ensure stocks are never full enough and mass purchases of weapons continually needed. There are good reasons the nearly last two US Secretary,of Defenses worked for major defense contractors. For Putin he uses an economist bean counter, now - interesting contrast. I count on the aggressors in Washington winning out almost always at least strategically whatever the poor geopolitical result. Maybe that is a view too much by a Canadian who looks more at the UN, multilateralism and diplomacy and peacekeeping as a better way? https://lnkd.in/gDK5Q7Pq

A major collection of essays that questions whether contemporary capitalism will end with a bang or a whimper—from a leading political economist and the author of Buying Time. After years of ill health, capitalism is now in a critical condition. Growth has given way to stagnation; inequality is leading to instability; and confidence in the money economy has all but evaporated. In How Will Capitalism End?, the acclaimed analyst of contemporary politics and economics Wolfgang Streeck argues that the world is about to change. The marriage between democracy and capitalism, ill-suited partners brought together in the shadow of World War II, is coming to an end. The regulatory institutions that once restrained the financial sector’s excesses have collapsed and, after the final victory of capitalism at the end of the Cold War, there is no political agency capable of rolling back the liberalization of the markets. Ours has become a world defined by declining growth, oligarchic rule, a shrinking public sphere, institutional corruption and international anarchy, and no cure to these ills is at hand.

FLASH BACK OF (2021/07/03) THE NATURE OF CONTEMPORARY POLITICS. Contemporary politics is the systematic and continuous struggle and scheming to manipulate the desires of men in order to influence both their mind, brain and senses such as to gain power and authority; for the purpose to control their resources,in the interest of self, associates and probably the general public; and also continuous quest to retain power and authority, remain in power and excercise authority for the same purpose; and manipulate another election to further perpetuity self and lieutenants in power for the similar purpose, ad infinitum!
