At the exhibition space of the Transportation Research Board annual meeting this year, an innovative project is being showcased: Empathy at the Intersection. Run by MassDOT in cooperation with @TRB and other like-minded organisations, it tackles some of the most important challenges our sector is faced with: inclusivity, accessibility and equity. The project invites visitors to ‘step into the shoes” of those not able bodied or unimpaired, those who are not necessarily tall, young, white and digitally aware adults. It invites us to see the world with the eyes of others. It invites us to empathise. Empathy is a very important skill for those who wish to serve the community by designing mobility systems, products and services. Truth is, those of us working in the field of transportation, do really want to serve the community.
