#passion = #purpose - every damn time. Some of you know that I was an #underdog in the #UAS #industry - just a guy who got obsessed with #FPV and the related #tech. I’m used to rejection (at this point, immune to it). Here’s an incomplete list of #drone companies I applied to the last 8 years and got #rejected from: - Precisionhawk - Skyward - Amazon - Wing - Teledyne FLIR - Airmap - Hangar - Aerobo - Zipline - Teal Drones - Auterion - DroneUp - Vantage Robotics - Freefly Systems - Skydio - Anduril Industries - Shield AI - American Robotics Inc. - BRINC Drones #funfact: almost *none* of the hiring managers at *any* of these roles are working at those firms, and 90% are no longer in the #UAS #industry. Some advice (that I wish I knew back then): - don’t accept #rejection as a reflection of your personal self (every ‘no’ truly is one step closer to a ‘yes’) - NEVER hold a grudge against those who didn’t see your value initially (there is often another chance down the way, don’t burn the bridge) - *never* stop pushing 📸: spending time in #Scotland with a fellow #selfmade #entrepreneur in drones, Ross Laing - Edinburgh Drone Company. (If you’re in the UK and need custom work, holler at him - he’s the guy….)

The unmanned aviation industry is undergoing seismic shifts as major aerospace and defence firms snap up innovative drone startups. In the past few months alone, we've seen BAE Systems acquire UK-based Malloy Aeronautics and their heavy-lift electric drones, while Airbus finalised a deal for US drone maker Aerovel. Rumours are also swirling about a possible takeover of Callen-Lenz. On the surface, these acquisitions seem like smart moves to expand unmanned portfolios and bring cutting-edge technologies in-house. BAE Systems touted the "synergy" with Malloy to enable "greater achievements in uncrewed aerial systems."Airbus said Aerovel's Flexrotor drone "fits into our strategy to expand our UAS offerings." However, history shows that wrapping innovative small companies into large, complex organisations often stifles the very #innovation that made them attractive acquisition targets in the first place: cultural clashes, leadership-heavy teams, and slow decision-making bog down progress. A 1999 RAND study of DARPA's innovative acquisition approach for high-altitude endurance #drones found that while the nontraditional structure enabled flexibility and accelerated development, it also led to inadequate engineering discipline and accountability conflicts. Will Malloy and Aerovel face similar challenges within BAE and Airbus? More broadly, the unmanned aviation market is forecast to see declining investment in the near term after years of rapid growth. Drone company funding dropped by half in 2023, with particular decreases in later-stage venture capital. At the same time, artificial intelligence and #autonomy still present opportunities; inflation, supply chain issues, and slow regulatory progress make investors more cautious. For the #UK drone industry to flourish, it's imperative that we bolster support for small and medium enterprises to maintain their independence and agility. This could be achieved through targeted government #funding, tax incentives, and public-private #partnerships, which could serve as a lifeline. Without such measures, we run the risk of witnessing a 'brain drain' as the most promising startups are absorbed by global giants. These are pivotal times for unmanned aviation. While consolidation is inevitable in any maturing market, we must be careful not to let it come at the cost of the disruptive innovation that will ultimately propel our industry forward. #DroneInnovation #AviationConsolidation #UKDroneEcosystem #SupportDroneSME #UnmannedAviationTrend #FosterDroneInnovation
