In this blog post, we discuss how these frequently overlooked factors will significantly influence how deep tech develops in the future. When entrepreneurs and innovators adopt a growth-oriented approach, they’re more likely to embrace challenges and lead the way for groundbreaking discoveries. Developing an entrepreneurial mindset and culture as a foundational step is essential for creating a thriving ecosystem. A culture that values open communication, shared learning, and cross-industry partnerships creates ground for innovation to flourish. Our newest blog highlights key findings from comprehensive research and asset mapping of Europe’s Deep Tech ecosystem. We identified critical challenges —Pre-incubation, Incubation, and Acceleration, as well asmarket fragmentation and funding limitations, included. The goal of this phase, which was led by the University Industry Innovation Network (UIIN), was to determine the requirements and difficulties associated with deep tech commercialisation to establish stronger support systems within European HEI (Higher Education Institutions) and beyond. Deep Tech ventures begin with a problem identified through scientific research, and the technology that follows aims to address this challenge. In contrast to traditional tech startups, which often focus on market-ready applications, Deep Tech companies are founded on groundbreaking scientific discoveries or engineering innovations. These ventures offer solutions built around unique, protected, or difficult-to-replicate technological or scientific advantages. One of the defining features of Deep Tech is its extended development cycle. While these prolonged R&D periods pose significant challenges, they are intrinsic to the process. Deep Tech innovations aim to solve critical societal issues, requiring substantial effort and targeted support to navigate the high levels of technological and commercial risk involved. Despite Europe's leadership in research, many groundbreaking technologies don't reach the market. DT Launch Pad, led by Delft University of Technology, has a goal to change that. This project supports the European Deep Tech community with comprehensive services, talent development, international knowledge exchange, and fostering start-ups. Currently, in Work Package 2, we're mapping research and assets to understand the needs of Deep Tech in Europe. We are happy to share 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘋𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵, it offers a comprehensive examination of the state of Deep Tech commercialisation. Our findings reveal the specific needs of Deep Tech startups, from mentorship and legal guidance to funding and skill development. Europe still lags behind the U.S. and Asia in scaling up Deep Tech despite having a strong startup ecosystem because of fragmented markets, a lack of capital, and a lack of commercial competence. How Europe Can Compete with US & China in Tech Innovation ? In my latest article, I explore how Europe is positioning itself to lead in global tech by focusing on deep tech, AI, and sustainability. The European Innovation Council (EIC), with its €10 billion fund, is providing vital support to startups, but according to the Draghi report, we need around €800 billion to truly compete on the world stage. As an EIC board member and CEO of LG Sonic, I’ve seen first-hand how Europe can nurture startups and scale groundbreaking technologies sustainably.
