Had a fantastic conversation on AITnews/The Weekend Show with the incredible host, Andrew Agbo-Madaki, actress and women’s health advocate Ini Dima-Okojie and Sports Presenter, Jimmie Akinsola about the urgent need to empower women and girls in Nigeria. We discussed the importance of creating an environment where women can thrive, make their own choices, and contribute fully to our nation's progress. As Nigeria celebrates a pivotal moment with over 60% female representation at the Olympics, it's clear that investing in women is key to our nation's success. At Gatefield where women make up over 70% of our workforce and management, we’re committed to empowering women and positive change happen. My two takeaways: 1. We need to change the narratives about women and their place in society until we create new norms and entrench gender equality as a society. 2. We need more champions and allies (men and women) demanding and holding leaders accountable for women’s economic opportunities and demanding more seats at the table for women in decision-making. Grateful to WRTHY for making these conversations possible. Watch the full interview here - https://lnkd.in/dwVHHRGn #EmpowerHerGame💪🏾

Let's talk about Rwanda. 🇷🇼 In the aftermath of the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, over one million people lost their lives over a period of 100 days. An estimated 100,000-250,000 women were raped during the three months of genocide in Rwanda. Women accounted for around 70 per cent of the population following the genocide, which led to a massive shift in the country’s workforce. However, today women in Rwanda are leading the country's reconstruction efforts, from rural villages to the national parliament, where women hold two-thirds of the seats. The country is making strong progress toward achieving gender equality: In 2021, local leadership in Rwanda led the process of establishing Women for Women Rwanda (WfW-Rwanda) as an independent sister organization. Through WfW-Rwanda, our Stronger Women, Stronger Nation (SWSN) program supports women by providing peer support and training which enables them to generate income, save money for the future, and achieve economic independence to support their families. The Impact: 👉 Since the program began, a total of 80,348 women have been reached. 👉 399 women graduated from Stronger Women, Stronger Nations Programme in 2023. Through WfW-Rwanda, our SWSN program supports women by providing peer support and training which enables them to generate income, save money for the future, and achieving economic independence to support their families 👉 Since inception, our local team has reached 920 men through our Men’s Engagement Program. Through the program, local leadership uses a “training the trainer” approach to teach men about gender equality, women’s rights and how to influence other men in their communities to enable an environment for women to reach their full potential and exercise their rights. 👉 In Rwanda, in addition to our one-year training program for women, we also offer specialized vocational training for cooperatives founded by program graduates. Read more about our work in Rwanda at the link in the comments.

Sanjog: Empowering Women, Not Rescuing Them Sanjog has recently come across some feedback that our website might project an image of us as a rescue-oriented organisation. We want to take this opportunity to clarify our core purpose and address the misconception. Sanjog's mission is fundamentally opposed to the idea of playing the saviour. Our work centres on empowering women, not rescuing them. We believe that long-lasting change can be achieved when women have the agency and resources to define their own futures. We were surprised to learn that a feminist grant-making organisation perceives Sanjog as a rescue-focused entity based solely on our website. This is concerning because: (a) Our purpose is not to rescue: Sanjog works alongside women, providing them with the tools and support they need to navigate their own journeys. This could involve skills training, legal aid, or access to education. (b) Unintended website message: We are genuinely unaware of any content on our website that portrays us as a rescue organisation. We would appreciate any feedback on how our website www.sanjogindia.org might be interpreted this way so we can rectify it. (c) Importance of open dialogue: It disappoints us that the organisation reached a conclusion without opening a conversation or seeking clarification. This approach seems to contradict the values of open dialogue and understanding that one would expect from a feminist organisation. Sanjog is committed to working towards a future where women are not in need of rescuing. We advocate for systemic change that addresses the root causes of gender inequality and empowers women to claim their rightful place in society. For a deeper understanding of our approach, we recommend reading this article by Idronline: Human Trafficking in India: Towards Empowerment and Systems Change. We would be happy to connect with any organisation to discuss our work further and explore potential areas of collaboration. Sanjog is open to any feedback that can help us better represent our mission on our website. #feminism #women #rescue #empowerment #development #gender #equity
