“Supporting Women’s Participation in the Workforce: A Call for Action” Earlier this week , in the Egyptian Senate, I emphasized the urgent need for supportive policies to bridge the gender gap in employment. Currently, only 16% of women in Egypt participate in the workforce, compared to 75% of men. This disparity highlights a significant policy shortfall, as closing this gap could boost our GDP by 50%. A safe working environment is essential for increasing women’s participation. Yet, we still lack a domestic labor law and a comprehensive framework to ensure women’s safety in the workplace. I called on minstry if labor to implement my propsal that was passed last year of expanding the Gender Equality Unit’s mandate to include guidelines for addressing workplace violence. Additionally, I stressed the importance of protecting Egyptian workers abroad, many of whom face exploitation and, in some cases, fall victim to human trafficking. We must collaborate with the National Coordinating Committee to Combat and Prevent Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons to ensure their safety. #womenempowerment #Egypt #SupportingWomen #WorkplaceSafety

Last year, I embarked on a new adventure with Dr. Carmen Geha , Axelle Meouchy , Charlotte Karam and the rest of the SAWI team, diving deep into the legal landscapes of eight MENA countries (Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia). Our mission? To understand the laws that exist to ensure equality among individuals in the workplace. We wanted to uncover the legal frameworks that support the creation of Equal Employment Opportunities for all employees, regardless of their background. Why Equal Employments Opportunities (EEOs) Matter? EEOs mean providing every individual with the same chances to be hired and to succeed at work, free from discrimination and bias. It's about fairness, respect, and enabling everyone to achieve their full potential regardless of their background or connections or the need for wasta. EEOs are the basis for ensuring recruitment and promotion practicies that are based on MERIT, a practice that is crucial not only for individuals but also for building economically and socially prosperous societies. Inclusive workplaces are the foundation for innovative, resilient, and thriving economies. When everyone has the chance to contribute meaningfully, it drives sustainable development and growth. Our journey has been enlightening. We've gathered invaluable insights and uncovered both strengths and gaps in the existing legal structures. We believe that by sharing our findings, we can contribute to creating more inclusive and equitable workplaces across the MENA region. Stay tuned as we prepare to release our comprehensive report. We're excited to share our discoveries with you and contribute to the ongoing dialogue on workplace equality and sustainable development. #EqualEmploymentOpportunities #WorkplaceEquality #MENA #LegalFrameworks #DiversityAndInclusion #SustainableDevelopment #EconomicGrowth #Research #ReportComingSoon

I am excited to announce that the UNOPS Afghanistan Community Resilience and Livelihoods project has been nominated for the 2024 UN Procurement Awards in the Sustainable Procurement and Supply category! The project exemplifies dynamic and adaptable procurement strategies, revitalizing Afghanistan's private sector and community involvement post-government collapse while ensuring ethical labour, gender equality, and stakeholder engagement. Through this initiative, UNOPS has reactivated the local economy, created jobs, and improved urban environments in Afghanistan. This nomination comes one year after UNOPS won the UN Procurement Award with a Women-Owned Business (WOB) Initiative in Yemen in 2023. Today, I had the privilege of participating in the interactive event titled “Impact of Domestic Violence on Women’s Economic Environment,” organized by GIZ Jordan. I was particularly impressed by the Sarh Group’s efforts in creating supportive workplaces where women feel comfortable and valued. In Jordan, women’s professional needs include flexible working hours, adequate maternity leave, and robust support systems for re-entering the workforce. Experience indicates that the service sector is more adept at implementing such measures compared to the industrial sector. However, I believe significant opportunities remain to enhance women’s economic empowerment across all industries. Globally, increasing women’s participation in the workforce has shown substantial economic benefits. For instance, achieving gender parity in labor force participation could boost global GDP by up to $28 trillion, or 26%, by 2025. Additionally, companies with higher gender diversity are 29% more likely to outperform their peers. By addressing these needs and leveraging existing opportunities, a more inclusive and equitable economic environment for women in Jordan and the broader MENA region can be achieved.
