Henrich and colleagues famously highlighted that individuals from "Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic" (WEIRD) cultures represent only 12% of the global population. Yet, much of scientific research relies on these populations, even though they are statistically outliers and culturally distinct from the rest of the world. This raises a critical challenge: how can we achieve generalizable conclusions in science without greater diversity in population samples? Two major barriers contribute to this issue: 1️⃣ Unequal access to resources and opportunities for scientific work worldwide. 2️⃣ A lack of practical guidance for researchers on how to diversify their population samples and engage in more inclusive practices. In my recently published commentary paper in the Journal of Neuroscience, I outline practical steps for conducting research projects like those displayed below 👇 . “The only reason to pursue a career in science is an enormous curiosity to know what is really true.” - medicine laureate Thomas Südhof Südhof helped to solve the mystery of how the cell organises its transport system. Each cell is a factory that produces and exports molecules, transported around the cell in small packages called vesicles. Three laureates shared the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the molecular principles that govern how this cargo is delivered to the right place at the right time in the cell. One of my favorite experiences that I will never forget was when I had the chance to mentor Felix Wu at Rice University plus I had a chance to be his teaching assistant for Social Psychology. I had the privilege to see him grow from the time he took social psychology early in his undergraduate career to now earning his PhD in Industrial Organizational Psychology. Looking back, I do think doing a PhD was actually a lot of fun. But while memories do tend to grow sweeter with time, I still remember the hard times as well. The days when I questioned my life choices and wondered what on earth had I done with my life. The days when it would have been nice to have had some good advice on how to deal with the rejections, the feeling of being totally inadequate, and the overall uncertainty of life in academia. 8 collaborative projects awarded funding to support and promote scientific interactions between researchers from different organizations and disciplines ↓ The national Program for Academic leaders in Life Science (PALS) is a network for SciLifeLab Fellows, SciLifeLab & Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) Fellows & Wallenberg Centres for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) Fellows, representing researchers from ten Swedish universities and the Museum of Natural History (Naturhistoriska riksmuseet). “At SciLifeLab, we believe that bringing researchers together is the key to breaking new ground in science” says Disa Hammarlöf in the video. PALS offers excellent opportunities for experimental and computational scientists to meet in order to establish multi-disciplinary collaborations. The program is anticipated to contribute to strong national networks that could last for years to come and that will broadly enrich opportunities for excellence in life science. The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Knut och Alice Wallenbergs Stiftelse) co-funds the program.
