New space companies often underestimate the hazards of space radiation, leading to mission failures before their satellites reach the expected end of life. While initial costs for comprehensive mission design and testing might seem high, they are investments that maximize mission lifespan and performance. Italian-Operated Space Center in Kenya to Resume Earth Observation Missions Italy's Luigi Broglio Space Centre in Kenya, previously dormant for decades, is set to relaunch operations focused on Earth observation satellite launches, Italian Minister for Business and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso announced on Sunday. This initiative, part of a broader plan to enhance Italy’s presence in space technology, will target climate change monitoring with low-orbit micro satellites, specifically addressing challenges like desertification. Speaking ahead of the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, Urso explained, “Our goal is to give this facility a fresh and ambitious mission.” He also highlighted the space center’s potential for educational and professional training opportunities for local students, industry experts, and scientists. Located about 30 kilometers north of Malindi, the Luigi Broglio Space Centre has been managed by Italy's space agency, ASI ® , since the 1960s, with its last mission taking place in 1988. AT CLEAN SPACE DAYS: ADVANCING SUSTAINABLE SPACE MISSIONS     OHB Italia participated with Dr. Tharek Mohtar, to the #CleanSpaceDays at #ESTEC from October 8th to 11th, an event dedicated to professionals and enthusiasts committed to the #sustainability of space missions. But what does OHB Italia bring to this topic? OHB Italia is leading a consortium to develop the Grappling and Docking Interface (#GDI) for ESA’s "In-Space Proof-of-Concept 1" (InSPoC-1) mission, aimed at enabling safer and more sustainable space operations. So, what exactly is a GDI? A Grappling and Docking Interface (GDI) is a system that securely connects two spacecraft, such as a satellite and a service vehicle. This interface enables a stable link between the vehicles to support material transfer, repairs, or in-orbit refueling and maintenance. Think of it as a “grip” or “hook” that keeps the vehicles connected and precisely aligned, even under challenging conditions like speed variations or slight misalignments. Systems like these are critical for the future of in-orbit satellite and space station management, enabling efficient maintenance without returning vehicles to Earth.   Recently, OHB Italia S.p.A. completed Phase B1 of the GDI project, testing two interface prototypes to confirm their capture capabilities under different conditions. The flexible design allows for handling payloads of various sizes. Tests conducted in a space-simulating facility proved the GDI’s reliability, even with misalignments and variable speeds. ILA 2024, Day 2: Highlight was our signature on the "Zero Debris Charter". More than 40 companies and associations committed today for sustainable space operations 👍. This event attracted the highest number of visitors in the Space Pavillion. Also passive deorbit-technology has been mentioned by ESA, such as "drag augmentation devices". One year of work is behind us, 100s of years keeping EARTH's orbit free from debris in front of us. The UK Space Agency and New Zealand Space Agency have signed a blueprint for the removal and servicing of operational satellites that are very close together or making contact with one another. The arrangement, signed at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, is designed to support missions in the fast-growing areas of in-orbit servicing, space debris removal and satellite refuelling, known as ‘rendezvous and proximity’ operations.  Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency said:  "As space leaders from across the world gather in Milan this week, we’re pleased to agree with our partners in New Zealand a world-first arrangement to help ease the way for future missions that can help keep space sustainable.  "In-orbit servicing and manufacturing and space debris removal are high-growth areas for the global space sector, and we hope our work with New Zealand can act as a blueprint for other nations to follow and benefit from." Iain Cossar, Head of the New Zealand Space Agency said: "We place a lot of importance on space sustainability in New Zealand, and this agreement with the UK demonstrates our commitment to ensuring our space environment is safe and sustainable.  "The arrangement outlines how we will cooperate on active debris removal and in-orbit servicing missions.  "The principles and guidance we have developed could apply more broadly to other states, and like the UK, we hope this work can serve as a blueprint to enable these important activities internationally as we look to address the challenges posed by orbital debris."
