Navigating the Conference Maze Just read an eye-opening article by Christine Ro in Nature about the rise of "predatory conferences." As someone who's attended my fair share of industry events, this resonated and got me thinking: • Not all conferences are created equal. Some are outright scams, designed to make money off unsuspecting professionals and researchers. • It's not just newbies who get caught out! It's easy to feel "honored" to be invited as a speaker! • These sham events waste valuable time and damage scientific credibility: the costs go beyond just money. • Many such conferences popped up post-pandemic, the line between legitimate and questionable events has blurred, making it harder to spot the fakes. It's got me reflecting on my own experiences. While I've been fortunate to avoid these obvious scams, I've definitely attended some conferences that left me wondering if they were worth the time and money. We certainly need to be more discerning as conferences can be incredible opportunities for learning and networking, but they're also significant investments. One of my favourite avenues for my Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is to attend conferences. I've been to them in person and online - and hosted them online and in-person for The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (The CISI). In this article for FT Adviser I ponder how well we engage with online conferences and ask if in-person conferences are just a crutch for the easily distracted. Time is precious (and limited) so we need to be intentional in how we engage. Read to the end to hear my top five tips to get the most out of in-person conferences. https://lnkd.in/ea4GyPBK

An Abstract Submitting and Managing is an online platform that is used to organize conferences. It allows authors to submit their brief summaries of their research, which they want to present at the conference, as well as receive feedback from organizers and experts. It also helps conference organizers select and distribute abstracts by sections and sessions, as well as manage all aspects of preparing and conducting the conference. An Abstract Submitting and Managing system is needed to facilitate the process of submitting, managing and checking abstracts, as well as to improve the quality and significance of scientific papers that will be presented at the conference. It is also needed to make the conference more attractive and interesting for participants, as well as to increase its visibility and prestige.
