🌿 On June 12, 2024, the European Economic and Social Committee hosted a public hearing on Aligning the circular economy and the bioeconomy at EU and national level . The aim? Boost synergies between bioeconomy, circularity and sustainability through a systemic approach to the circular bioeconomy, led by rapporteur Cillian Lohan. Blanca Casares Guillén, policy expert at AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development), presented “Circular (bio)economy: a promising pathway for sustainable farming and development in rural areas?” 🍃✨ She highlighted significant political momentum, including a flagship initiative for prosperous rural areas with actions for the development of a sustainable bioeconomy. The Council Conclusions in 2023 stressed the need to focus on rural areas in developing a bioeconomy. Blanca also shared insights from the BEATLES project EU, where AEIDL leads the co-creation of policy recommendations and tools. 🧑🌾 🚜 Curious to learn more? 🌍 Shaping the future of agrifood systems: INRAE and FAO step up! INRAE and the FAO jointly organised a scientific seminar to explore prospective scenarios for the transformation of agrifood systems. The discussions aimed to: • 🔎 Present global scenarios alongside examples of scaling down to regional levels for agroecology, zero-pesticide, water resilience or climate change impact • 🔎 Discuss the impacts of these scenarios on relationships between countries with varying income levels We thank the experts from FAO, DG AGRI and the JRC (European Commission), the OECD-OCDE, Wageningen University & Research, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, and INRAE for sharing their perspectives on the global and local dynamics of agrifood system transitions. 🤝 A day dedicated to building more sustainable and resilient food systems through prospective approaches. #FoodSystems #Agroecology #ClimateChange

The #EcoReadyProject is on the move with exciting developments in Work Package 2 (WP2)! We've been busy collaborating with our 10 Living Labs across Europe to understand the unique challenges they face in their regions. Through a series of in-depth brainstorming sessions, we've gathered crucial insights on how climate change, food security, and biodiversity are intertwined in each area. These discussions are now fueling the creation of region-specific action plans, designed to tackle these challenges head-on. Our goal is to empower local communities by organizing targeted workshops, info-days, and other activities that will not only raise awareness but also equip stakeholders with practical solutions and tools for building climate-resilient agricultural practices. As we move forward, these tailored strategies will help us ensure that every region can adapt to the impacts of climate change while safeguarding food security and biodiversity. This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward a sustainable and resilient future for agriculture in Europe. Stay connected with us to see how we’re turning these plans into action! 📣 Call for Abstracts (posters and orals) 📣 Passionate about #soil? 🌱 Working on #sustainability for the food sector? Looking to present your research? 🗣️ We welcome abstracts from #earlycareerscientists to present at our #event "Toward Greener Food Futures" on 26 November 2024, in Lyngby, Denmark. SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACT 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejE8MJWn Session 4 will focus on #SoilHealth for Sustainable Food Systems: 🌱 Soil is the foundation of our food system. Healthy soils are essential to provide healthy food, reverse biodiversity loss, and safeguard human health, but also for achieving climate neutrality, a clean and circular economy and halting desertification and land degradation. Yet it is estimated that 60 to 70% of European soils are unhealthy, degraded or depleted. We urgently need to protect and restore these invaluable resources, as outlined by the EU Soil Strategy for 2030. Soil regeneration offers a pathway forward, combining practices to improve soil health and productivity. This session will explore the crucial connections between soil, human and planetary health. Their understanding is key to design solutions for resilient agricultural systems and sustainable food production.🌱 Have a look at the others sessions: 👉 For our Early Career Scientists Event (ECS only): https://lnkd.in/eDRhXcKZ 👉 For our Annual Symposium (open to all): https://lnkd.in/e8_wVBgu ⏳ Submission deadline: 15 June 2024 ⏳ Event hosted by DTU Skylab #SoilScience #RegenerativeAgriculture #HealthySoils #HealthyFood #EUMissionSoil #EUSoil #ClimateNeutrality #Biodiversity #SustainableFoodSystems

🌍 A Life-Changing Encounter with a Legend in Climate-Smart Agriculture and Sustainability 🌍 Last week, I experienced a true milestone in my career! 💫 I had the honor of attending two influential seminars at Texas A&M University, hosted by the National Academy of Sciences, where I not only heard from the iconic Professor David Zilberman but also met him in person at his office! 🎉🔥 For anyone who might not know: Professor Zilberman holds the Robinson Chair in Agricultural & Resource Economics at UC Berkeley. He’s more than an academic; he’s a game-changer! With over 400 publications and the 2019 Wolf Prize in Agriculture (think of it as the Nobel Prize of the agricultural world) 🏆, his work has shaped sustainable practices globally. A member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, he’s also been a consultant for major organizations like the EPA, USDA, World Bank, and FAO 🌎. His work spans from water policy and bioeconomy to climate change solutions and smart agriculture, making him a force in driving the future of sustainable agriculture. 💡 Our private conversation was nothing short of transformative! We dove deep into topics that matter to Egypt and the world: 🌱 Circular Economy: Building sustainable systems to reduce waste and promote efficient resource use. 🌍 Climate Change: Strategies for resilience and environmental stewardship. 🚜 Smart Agriculture: Implementing advanced methods that empower farmers and enhance resource optimization. This wasn’t just a meeting; it was a game-changing moment that fueled my commitment to bring impactful solutions to Egypt and beyond. 🌱💧 We even explored potential research collaborations focused on introducing actionable strategies to tackle challenges like water scarcity and sustainable food production in my home country. Grateful beyond words to Texas A&M University and the National Academy of Sciences for this opportunity. The journey to a sustainable future just gained new momentum, and I’m more excited than ever to take these insights forward. 🌟 💬 Let’s connect if you’re interested in building a sustainable future. Together, we can make real change happen! 🌎🙌 #TexasAMAggies #Aggies #TAMU #ClimateSmartAgriculture #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Leadership #Research #Innovation #GlobalImpact #Agriculture #SustainableDevelopment #EgyptianPioneers #YouthEmpowerment #TransformingTheFuture #EnvironmentalStewardship #SmartAgriculture #AgriEconomics
