Slowing Down: A European Lesson for 2025 After two incredible weeks traveling through Europe, one lesson stood out to me above all: downtime is truly downtime. At every café, every restaurant, it didn’t matter where we were—no one was in a rush. Servers weren’t hovering with the check, and when my husband and I finally asked for it, the response was almost always the same: a surprised look, followed by, “Is everything okay?” It became a running joke for us, but also a revelation. The pace wasn’t just slower; it was intentional. There’s an understanding that lingering over a meal, soaking in the moment, and truly relaxing isn’t just acceptable—it’s essential. As 2025 approaches, I’m working to bring that relaxed energy into my life. The rushed pace I often find myself in is self-imposed, and if I’ve learned anything, it’s that it’s not only unnecessary but unhealthy. Here’s to embracing the European approach—slowing down, savoring moments, and remembering that life doesn’t have to move at breakneck speed. What lessons are you bringing into the new year? ☕️🥐

Is it just me, or does December feel like the ultimate endurance event? At work, it’s about wrapping up the year while somehow also planning for the next. The emails keep coming, the targets still loom, and the reports won’t write themselves. At home, there’s the pressure of gifts, meals, school holidays, family events and a calendar that looks more packed than your inbox It’s a lot. With so many decisions to make – big ones, small ones, and everything in between – it’s easy to get caught up in what could be done rather than focusing on what needs to be done. Imagine shifting your focus to the decisions that really matter, at work and at home, and then letting go of the rest. Because no one needs perfect. They just need you, present and sane, as the year wraps up.

Over the past few weeks, our schools were tornadoes of activity from pageants to celebrations to assessments, but now that we’ve reached the midyear pause, I hope you’re enjoying slow(er) mornings, cozy vibes, and longer hugs with family and friends. I have always loved an opportunity for reflection (both looking back and looking ahead), and with that in mind, I want to give you a tool for New Year goal setting. When the new year comes around, you might set new goals or check in on existing goals for yourself, with teachers one-on-one, or with the whole faculty. This tool is useful in all of those contexts. It’s fun, colorful, and concrete. And if you know me, you know I love a metaphor--this one ticks that box, too. One week until the kids break up for the long summer holiday. Apprehension, anxiety, anticipation, relief, optimism... I'm feeling all of these at once. Anyone else? My kids are pooped. They need a break from the school conveyor belt - time to chill out, spread out, and feel free from daily routines. All good. Except... Juggling work and kids is tough at the best of times. The long summer break has always felt like an endurance event! 🥞 Constant food requests, 😫 Boredom complaints, 🤼♂️ Kitchen fights while I'm on calls, 🤯 Mess everywhere, 🐶 Arguments about dog-walking duties... I'm braced for a rollercoaster of emotions. But inbetween the chaos, there's joy. Last year, I took each kid on a separate trip, tailored to their interests. With my son, we explored Germany and Poland. In these pictures we're about to embark on a 7-hour train journey from Berlin to Krakow. The prospect of a rail journey of that length in the UK would fill me with dread. But it was a surprisingly delightful experience, rolling through the German and Polish countryside, the train was wonderfully clean, quick, had great snacks and drinks, and was - yes! - on time! My apprehension at the next 6 weeks has so many parallels with organisational life right now, especially given the scale and pace of change there is. Apprehension and anxiety are high, but if we support each other to navigate the novel and unexpected, real growth can happen. People need support to embrace uncertainty, stay curious rather than collapse into fear, and lean into learning opportunities. Leaders must acknowledge all emotions within their organisations and be transparent and supportive. With the right mindset (and a bit of emotional intelligence all round), we can turn challenges into opportunities for connection, growth and yes, joy. This year, Dylan and I are off to the Belgian Grand Prix. He's a bit of a Lewis Hamilton fan! 🇧🇪 🏎 I've never been to Belgium. Or a Grand Prix. I'm slightly apprehensive, but as a regular explorer, I'm also excited for what we'll discover - both in Belgium and throughout the 6-week break! What about you?
