Join us for an exciting conversation as we launch WWF’s new report “Assessing Financial Flows within the South West Indian Ocean Blue Economy”. The hybrid (in-person/online) event takes place on Tuesday, 8th October, from 14:00 to 17:00 (SAST/CET). The South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) is the second-most biodiverse ocean region on the planet and home to millions of coastal inhabitants who rely on nature for their wellbeing. It is critical that the future financing of the SWIO region’s blue economy is targeted at sustainable development pathways that restore and sustain the health of local ecosystems - so securing the resilience and well being of the coastal communities that rely on them. The report provides insights into current financing patterns in the SWIO region, identifying the investors and creditors of three major blue economy sectors in the region, namely, seafood, energy, and maritime transport and supporting infrastructure. It also examines the policies of several financial institutions active in the region to assess the extent to which externalized risks are considered when making blue investments and loans. Finally, it assesses whether current finance sector rules and regulations are sufficient to protect the region’s blue assets. 🌍 The bioeconomy is an essential part of a transition to a greener future. 🐟 From the soil we grow crops in, to the coastlines where we fish, to the genetic resources that enable innovation in multiple industries, nature and biodiversity are essential to the global economy. ⚖️ How we balance ecosystem health and economic growth going forward will be the defining trait of the 21st century. 🌐 Embedding regenerative practices and nature-positive principles within global financial architecture is necessary to tackle the intertwined crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. 🔍 Looking at the economy through a bioeconomic lens can also reveal a broad investment landscape. 👤 Sonja Gibbs, CFA, Managing Director and Head of Sustainable Finance at the Institute of International Finance, stressed the importance of protecting our natural capital and biodiversity. 📖 For more on the global efforts to advance a positive bioeconomy, read our G20 Stocktake paper: https://bit.ly/4bsUiyL #Bioeconomy #Bioeconomia #G20Brazil #NaturePositive #NatureFinance #MakingNatureCount #SustainableFinance
