This is the definition I use for Formula Trauma. I got the idea from Formula One racing in which the teams are given a "Formula" or strict specifications for the cars. The specifications paradoxically enable innovation in the areas that areas not specified. We have analogous constraints in healthcare: Pathophysiology, the disease process, cost that are not under our control but we should recognize the areas where we can innovate. I have had a borderline obsession with #kirigami and its applications since my sabbatical in 2017-2018. From a microfabrication background it isn't anything unusual (we often had to build with nearly 2D materials in surface micromachining and #MEMS) but the topic of #kirigami 📜 has been enjoying a renaissance recently for #composites, #softrobotics 🤖 and #additivemanufacturing, and I think it is mechanism to build devices and composites that would be impossible otherwise. While I was not able to attend #Robosoft2024 in person this year, it reminded me to finally post online an oldie but goodie video from our Robosoft 2019 late news poster submission on kirigami composites. I loved this project precisely because it was such a simple concept and yet worked very well - it is also a case of something well before its time, because it was developed unfunded and without a strong application at the time - just a request from George Whitesides to make a composite that could change stiffness by 1000X (maybe it was just a joke to keep me busy, I never found out 🤷♂️ 😂 ). We have since gotten quite a bit of interest (primarily on confidential projects at University of Alberta and ZiprPrint) but the problem with invention is sometimes it takes quite a while before you figure out the right market - even if you know you have something great. Thanks to my co-authors Daniel J. Preston, Amit Nagarkar, Stephanie Oyola-Reynoso, Ph.D. and George Whitesides for helping with that work waaay back when and getting me started on this weird and wacky journey to remake materials. 😁 #softrobotics #kirigami #biomimicry #research https://lnkd.in/gWxaqTAc
