Brazil is home to a vast, but overlooked, tropical savanna called the Cerrado. This sprawling patchwork of open grassland and scattered woodlands covers almost a quarter of the country — an area about the size of Greenland — providing habitat for 1,200 mammals, birds and reptiles and 6,000 plant species. Among its remarkable wildlife are giant anteaters, maned wolves, armadillos and brilliantly colored macaws. But today, more than half of the original Cerrado has been cleared for cattle ranching and soy farming, making it one of the fastest disappearing ecosystems on Earth. And only a fraction of the remaining Cerrado is fully protected by the Brazilian government — around 3 percent. In one corner of southwestern Brazil, a project designed by a sustainable timber operator, BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group, and supported by Conservation International, is breathing new life into the savanna.

A shocking 73% decline in global wildlife populations has been recorded since 1970, according to the WWF Living Planet Index. 💔 This devastating loss affects over 5,000 species. One of the leading causes? Animal agriculture. The demand for land to raise animals for food is driving habitat destruction and pushing species toward extinction. The Amazon, one of the world’s most vital carbon sinks, is at risk of becoming a carbon source due to deforestation for cattle grazing. 🌳🚜🐮 Freshwater species are being hit the hardest, with 40% of marine life also depleted due to human activity. Our oceans, forests, and rivers are all suffering as the food system prioritises animal agriculture at the expense of biodiversity. We’re nearing a dangerous tipping point that could lead to irreversible damage to the ecosystems we rely on for survival. 🌏✨ Global conservation efforts and shifting to a sustainable food system can help reverse this decline. But we must reduce our reliance on animal agriculture, protect existing habitats and reforest depleted land.

Yet megadiverse countries, like India, which are highly populated, seem to contradict this idea. While wildlife is imperilled in India, research is beginning to show that a physical and mental (perceived) disconnect from nature, such as through urbanisation, has insidious, deep-rooted and large-scale detrimental impacts on wildlife populations. Relative to this disconnect, the impacts of direct resource extraction by localised resource-dependent communities might be considered marginal. In this context, Dr Karnad's research examines wildlife conservation in India's marine realm. Specifically, she examines how cultivating a closer relationship with nature through food can help achieve wildlife conservation goals. To this end, she focuses on how attention to detail when purchasing and eating seafood ingredients can produce the kinds of actions that we celebrate in wildlife conservation. In this talk, Dr Divya Karnad, will dwell on her experience co-founding a sustainable seafood initiative, InSeason Fish, and how talking to diverse groups of people, about topics other than wildlife, can help bridge the gap between the economy and the conservation of threatened sharks in India.

Conservation International and BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group (TIG) are restoring Brazil's endangered Cerrado savanna, transforming 2,500 hectares (6,000 acres) of degraded pasture into thriving forests. This effort, blending conservation and sustainable timber production, has reintroduced a diverse array of wildlife, including jaguars, tapirs, and giant anteaters, while helping store climate-warming carbon.   The project combines restoring native forests with sustainable eucalyptus farming. Already, 319 animal and 65 plant species have been recorded, 17 of which are threatened. Wildlife corridors are connecting fragmented habitats, accelerating ecosystem recovery as animals spread seeds and create microhabitats.   In a landmark deal, the project has generated 8 million carbon credits for Microsoft and 1.3 million for Meta, showcasing its climate benefits. We have distributed 12,481 agroforestry trees and aim to plant 25,000 trees by 2025. 🌳👩🌾 🌍 Our initiatives include creating compost pits shaded by passion fruit trees for Women’s Wildlife Clubs and organizing urban farming demonstrations to raise community awareness. 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱? Preserving the wildlife is a must to maintain an ecological balance. According to the Living Planet Report 2022 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), there has been about a 69% decline in the wildlife population since 1970. The reasons behind such a staggering downfall in wildlife numbers are deforestation, human misconduct, animal exploitation, climate change, and consumer culture. As per the WWF, the extent to which the world is losing its animal species is 1,000 to 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. Since we play a key role in directing the wildlife towards extinction, it is us who must work towards preserving them. Let’s understand in what ways we can all contribute to wildlife conservation. ☑ 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁: We should focus on first mitigating our carbon footprint by adopting sustainable practices like using biodegradable products and energy-efficient appliances, and supporting businesses that advocate the conservation of biodiversity. ☑ 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀: Making a wildlife strip that helps connect two core habitats is essential since it allows free movement of animals, which is necessary for them to find resources that they need. ☑ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆: Consuming responsibly and practicing the classic trio known as reduce, reuse, and recycle, will prove conducive to the wildlife habitats. ☑ 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀: Engaging in large-scale plantation in previously deforested regions is a great way to conserve wildlife since it helps in habitat restoration. ☑ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Since unique genetic adaptations of a population is lost forever when they disappear, controlled breeding programs within shrinking populations can help ensure that the offspring of a pair inherits a broad spectrum of adaptations. The demand for shark meat has escalated, fueling unsustainable fishing practices that endanger numerous species. BUT WITH A DIFFERENT MEANING SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE: Despite efforts to curb practices like finning, where sharks are harvested solely for their fins, mortality rates remain alarming. This voracious appetite for shark meat coincides with dwindling fish stocks, compounding environmental pressures. AND IT BREAKS ME UP TO HEAR IT: As Brazil debates legislative measures to enhance transparency and restrict trade, stakeholders stress the need for informed consumer choices and greater ecological awareness. Amidst global Conservation efforts, the fate of Brazil’s sharks hangs in the balance. MANKIND'S ONLY SALVATION: A reverence for life is an ethos that, inter alia, imposes upon humans the solemn duty of stewardship of all life, all nature, all God's creatures. We are bidden to protect, assist, and enhance life, all life, ever seeking ways of permitting life to thrive, ever eschewing conduct that restrains, harms, or annihilates life. "Informed consumer choices and greater ecological awareness" are subsumed under and distilled into this: "The idea of reverence for life contains everything that expresses love, submission, compassion, the sharing of joy, and common striving for the good of all. We must free ourselves from thoughtless existence." That is conferring the love of Jesus universally. That is a reverence for life.
