Happy Christmas from all of us at Ella’s, and thank you for your support. This beautiful painting is by Aisha, one of the survivors we’ve worked with this year… ‘I was so depressed before, after everything that happened to me. Now, I’m completely different. My idea of womanhood is completely changing,’ says Aisha. ‘Here at Ella’s, we can follow our dreams. My goal for the future is to go to college and become a graphic designer. I used to feel so hopeless, but now I don’t. Hopefully, God willing, I will have a good future.’ This is what it’s all about: not just surviving, but thriving. Not just feeling better, but feeling great. Not just feeling safe, but feeling strong! Have a lovely break, and we'll see you in 2025. #happychristmas #thankyou

After a decade in the design and marketing industry, the big B finally got me — BURNOUT. So, for the last three years I have been slowing down and considering what kind of life I want. Being queer, fat, disabled, neurodivergent, you name it - I don’t fit the “mold” anymore. As I’ve grown more comfortable with myself, I’m okay with not "fitting." Being a tattoo artist has lived in my head rent free since I was probably 10. Throughout middle and high-school friends would ask me to draw tattoos for them, ooo-ing and awe-ing over their designs. As I tucked that dream away, I stumbled into the design world. Still creative, yes, but not quite *it.* As I started getting tattoos of my own, the thought came back. “But you already have a career. “It’s not the right time.” I talked myself out of even looking into what it’d take to get started. Third times a charm. Right? Here we are. The universe is yelling, “JUMP.” So, I am working to become a tattoo artist. My first steps are to expand my portfolio and absorb as much as I possibly can about the art. Life is weird. Stay tuned for artwork. Thanks for joining me on this journey. 🖤 (Encouragement and support is *always* welcome. This is scary stuff!) #tattoos #graphicdesign #artist #neurodivergent #disabled #careerchange

Many people have likely now heard about Tempest Photography, the company that recently offered parents the option of school photographs without the disabled children in the class. Since the initial incident, more stories have emerged from parents that their children have previously been asked by Tempest photographers to remove their assistive aids for photos. This suggests a lack of understanding that these aids are not something to hide but rather, a tool that allows someone to more comfortably exist in the world. Removing them can often cause anxiety and result in a photo that serves only as a reminder of a stressful event. The decision to offer parents an image of the class without the disabled children present erases the existence of these children and is a horribly ableist action. It sends a message that disabled people do not deserve to be represented in society. Given the rise of hate crimes and animosity we've seen towards disabled people in recent years, this is incredibly callous. Representation is needed now more than ever. To add insult to injury, the statement that Tempest released in the wake of this scandal is sorely lacking. Nowhere in the statement do they mention disabled children. It refers to the omission of "some members of the class from the photograph"; such a generic phrase that downplays the severity of the action to the point that it's hard to accept the later claim of being committed to meaningful change. Meaningful change would have been immediately owning the harmful act and acknowledging the impact it had on the disabled children affected and their parents. https://lnkd.in/eP7gnJKh #AccessibilityForAll #Accessibility #DisabledRepresentation #DisabilityRights

RUBY • As we start a new season of Circle Return I have the joy of beginning the circle this time round and have chosen to share the everyday bond with my loyal friend. She is my sidekick my shadow and my full-time assistant in life. Id be nowhere without her, she is the one constant I can really trust. I looked everywhere for some spoken word about the human connection to four legged friends but almost all were about dogs lost. So copilot helped me write something about my friend who is very much here 😊 I am handing over the circle return baton to Juliet Sheath for the next instalment. Circle Return: A visual conversation, is an offshoot from the Association of Photographers f22 community. Featuring female identifying photographers and visual artists from the UK, with different backgrounds, ages and ethnicities. Co-founders Helen Roscoe, Nicola Tree and Karen Yeomans initiated Circle Return as a thread of visual and written communication to help build community and connection with their fellow f22 peers during the winter months in 2023. Cost of living was at an all-time high and there was a need to connect and engage in personal work with other creatives. Instagram becomes our virtual diary, where each week an artist makes a visual entry of their story in response to the act of listening to the previous artist’s story. Our aim with Circle Return is foster common ground and participation in a non-hierarchical, non-prescriptive community of creative exchange, with no single hegemonic voice. The project has never been about the final outcome, but rather a willingness to learn, form meaningful connections and enjoy the creative process. Circle Return is a conscious effort by a collective of women to ‘see’ each other. Let’s talk about the power of shyness 🫣 A chat with another photographer recently brought up some old feelings about how I perceive myself. They said that they sense a ‘shyness’ in my work, and I became rather defensive, saying that I’m not shy as such, perhaps it’s that I’m quite self-deprecating. Not too show-off-y. Prefer to listen more than speak. And then I realised that’s probably the very definition of shyness. 🙈 When I was younger, I used to hate that people used to say that I was quiet, as it seemed to suggest that it’s a negative trait. And it’s true that because I was so unsure of myself, that quietness held me back. But nowadays I think being quiet - or an introvert - can be an asset, (and not just because my hearing is getting more sensitive in my old age.) As an introvert, I know how hard it can be for our clients to ‘show up’ and put ourselves out there. And yet we still do it. I’ve helped many fellow introverts with their portrait session experience because I make the session about them and do my best to notice if they’re at ease. If a client is feeling unsure of themselves then we’ll stop and chat to figure out how to make it a more positive experience. Perhaps all photographers do that in our own way, but it’s easy to take that for granted. I do think it’s time us quieter types started to see this trait as a strength! #selfportrait #selfconfidence #seemamiahphotography #aberdeenheadshots

I've just had a tremendous piece of email marketing from Suzy at the Centre for Ageing Better. This includes 5 great tips on avoiding ageism in your imagery. I've got a client who works with older people and people with mobility issues and we were getting pretty frustrated with the stereotypical imagery in mainstream libraries. I've viewed 100s over the past few months. Mainstream picture libraries have ... ❌ Too many images of older people and people in wheelchairs being 'helped'. Not enough images of people just doing regular stuff, getting on with life. ❌'Couple' images where the man is old and the woman is about half his age. ❌ So many images of older people in wheelchairs with a rug over their knees. Way too many rugs. ❌ A lot of people dressed in beige. I loved the top five tips from Centre for Ageing Better on avoiding ageism in image choices, some great tips: https://lnkd.in/g64Piwyi Also, have a look at their Age Positive Photo library that's free to use and represents a much more interesting range of people and diversity. Sharing to photographers I know, that might want to get involved with this library: Benjamin, Nick, Stephen ❤️ #AgeingBetter #BanBeige
