As the alt-protein sector begins its climb out of the trough on the hype cycle, plenty of promising movement is being made across the space. From investments in enabling technologies, to regulatory approvals paving the way for novel foods, exciting partnerships continue to be forged between industry titans and cutting-edge innovators. Challenges and bottlenecks remain. Investors need to see real numbers before releasing funds, scaling remains a costly and lengthy process, and new restrictive legislations are emerging in some regions. Our research on the role of social capital in facilitating shared value creation within industrial symbiosis was well-received at the 40th IMP Conference 2024 in Oulu. A big thank you to my co-author, Anna Sibińska, for presenting our findings from the Polish agri-food sector. We truly appreciate the valuable feedback we received. Industrial symbiosis exemplifies a regional system of interdependent actors working together to promote a more sustainable industry. However, business ecosystems with sustainable goals must navigate various tensions to create shared value. Our work explores whether and how the characteristics and dynamics of social capital can help mitigate these tensions and support shared value creation in sustainable business models. We are currently seeking more examples of innovative industrial symbiosis from the agri-food sector in the UK and Finland. If you are aware of such ecosystems, we would love to hear from you. Last week, my colleague Nuo Wang and I were deeply engaged in extensive data collection at ECOMONDO - ITALIAN EXHIBITION GROUP, one of the most important trade fairs in Europe for green and circular economy. We interviewed more than 30 companies and organisations to build a panel aimed at analyzing how global value chains and multinational business models are evolving in response to policies and strategies focused on preserving our planet. It was incredible to see how much technology has advanced to support this transition, offering solutions that seemed unthinkable just yesterday. We sincerely thank the many companies and institutions from all over the world that took the time to share their commitment to this journey.
