Today is R U OK? Day - a reminder that a simple conversation can make a big difference. Recent findings from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide highlight how critical it is for us all to check in with each other, especially those who have served our country. Mental health isn't just the responsibility of health professionals—it's something we can all support. With the rise of #socialprescribing (connecting people to community services for better well-being), it's clear that mental health is everyone’s business. Let’s take the time not just today, but everyday, “Are you OK?” #RUOKDay #MentalHealth #Veterans #RoyalCommission #Defence

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆'𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 Families, caregivers, friends, and fellow veterans often serve as the first line of support for those experiencing distress. Their role is critical in supporting mental health and wellbeing, especially for veterans. To strengthen this support, the Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) is funding training courses to equip members of the veteran community with the skills and knowledge to recognise those at risk of suicide, provide initial support, intervene, and connect individuals to the right mental health resources. These training programs, delivered by Mental Health First Aid Australia and LivingWorks Australia, will cover: 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 – understanding mental health issues and how to respond. 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 – recognising the signs of suicidal thoughts and how to provide support or connect to further care. Courses will be available online and in-person across Australia in the coming months. We sometimes think that as soon as we get out of the #military, our mental health will magically get better. We delay treatment, bury our feelings, all just to get that DD-214. But I’m here to tell you that anything left untreated will never properly heal. The civilian sector has its own stressors, and when those are piled on top of everything else, it can be a devastating combo. It’s time we stop losing our brothers and sisters to suicide. It’s time we all work together as a community to lower this statistic. Seek mental health support. Talk to other #veterans. Explore all of the resources available.

As we celebrate both #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth and #NationalMilitaryAppreciationMonth in May, we must recognize a crucial intersection between mental health and military service. Service members can develop PTSD or other or other trauma-related disorders, as well as depression, anxiety, panic, and grief. The National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) estimates that nearly 7% of veterans experience PTSD in their lifetime, as does 6% of the general population. We recognize that mental health disorders can impact anyone, at any time, so learning to understand these health concerns is critical to our mission to provide quality, compassionate care. Some very insightful statistics in this article. Here are some highlights that stood out to me. 💭 ⭕️ An estimated 41% of veterans are in need of mental health care programs every year. ⭕️ $174 million is only a fraction (0.047%) of the VA’s overall budget for Mental Health, and an anemic percentage of the 2025 total VA budget request of $369 billion. ⭕️ Additionally, many of the grants have gone to larger organizations. In 2022, for example, 80 Fox Grant awards went to healthcare corporations and state-level organizations. Smaller organizations often have the ability to form the closest relationships with veterans and do not typically have as many options for procuring financial support for their programming. Progress has been made but it's time for communities and local orgs to get back to work as the VA is not coming to save us. #veterans #mentalhealth #Arizona https://lnkd.in/gJfnRCeS
