It seems so ironic that we are celebrating Human Rights Day today. So much poverty and still such unabating inequality. Fellow South Africans trying to live on R350 to feed families for a month and gender based violence continuing to prevail. As South Africans we all need to do so much more to make this a country - that genuinely is a Mecca for human rights - not a cardboard cutout of something called a 'Rainbow Nation'. It starts with getting to know one another, getting to understand where we are similar and how we are different, and understanding how to bridge those gaps so that we can meet one another as equals and understand the injustices in the lives of so many of our compatriots. In 2022 we co-founded the African Feminist Collective on Feminist Informed Policies (AFIP Collective) following the observation of the limited voice of African feminists in the global discourse on #FeministForeignPolicies (FFP). This week we meet in Nairobi for the first time with other African feminists from across the continent, including experts in peace and security, defense, feminist economy, climate justice, migration, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. We are working on a platform for robust discussions, knowledge exchange, and collaboration to shape a framework that reflects the unique needs, challenges, and aspirations of African feminists in influencing African countries' approaches to foreign policy as well as those with existing #FFP frameworks that claim to be feminist. #Africanfeminism #Afrofeminisms

In my meeting with the Minister of Women’s Affairs of Chile @totiorellanag we discussed the deteriorating situation facing women and girls in Afghanistan as they face increasing deprivation of basic rights. We discussed future collaborative efforts to hold the Taliban accountable through the international system including the need for codifying gender apartheid . It's crucial that these framework protects those being exploited by oppressive regimes; otherwise, we risk a world defined by hypocrisy and discrimination. #InternationalAccountability

“Gender is how you make the case for civilizational superiority and to the entitlement to the land that comes with it. Race is never just race, it's always gender, sexuality and class operating through each other; the systems come into operation through each other and they give content to each other. This is an effect that we often try to squeeze into the concept of intersectionality. You know, when we use this concept too often, we understand it as a kind of diversity: one system is piling up on another. So, you have gender, and race piles up on it and sexuality piles up on it and class piles up on it. And that kind of mathematical piling up, sometimes blocks our understanding of how one system becomes the other system. Solidarity really requires that we navigate this very complex geopolitical field, attentive to the co-constitution of systems of oppression rather than understand how the systems are discrete and merely complicate each other. Methodologically, a place to start is to think about how one system is the language of another system, how is that a specific notion of gender gives content to racial hierarchies and how racial hierarchies require a gendered cast of characters - it requires brutal misogynist racialized men, it requires invisible racialized women we don't think about them too much, and it requires white women who suffer and who suffer more than any other women.”

#16DaysOfActivism At the September Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (#FIFAfrica24), African feminist activists and researchers discussed the weaponisation of disinformation campaigns against women and marginalised groups, and highlighted the intersection of gender, race, and colonialism in online attacks. Participants shared their experiences combating these narratives and the strategies they have turned to for resistance, which have included #digitalliteracy, policy reform, coalition building, and mental health support. The conversation hosted by Rosebell Kagumire Feminists In Kenya (FIK) and Whose Knowledge? underscored the urgent need for sustained efforts to counter #disinformation and reclaim narratives, emphasising the importance of intersectional solidarity and pan-African collaboration. The discussion also touches upon the role of governments and international actors in perpetuating these harmful trends.
