Ukrainian cities face ongoing threats and require immediate recovery, alongside sustainable urban development strategies. How can we effectively combine these approaches to enhance urban resilience? Over 30 international experts from city administrations, universities, NGOs, and city associations gathered to discuss urban resilience during wartime at an Workshop. Experts shared research findings on integrating urban resilience into Integrated Urban Development Concepts (IUDC), emphasizing the need for action-oriented approaches during crises. Researchers from RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and HafenCity Universität Hamburg (HCU) presented vulnerability and resilience criteria essential for urban planning strategies. Discussions included urban regeneration strategies and the importance of EU collaboration in protecting civil society and energy infrastructure. This initiative will continue with future workshops, implementing criteria in case studies. It is part of the project "Strengthening Urban Resilience in the Areas of Supply Infrastructure and Housing in Ukraine (SUR)," funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ Ukraine. #GIZ

It is always a pleasure and interesting to meet with the directorates of the European Commission to discuss our positions on different matters! Our work on how to shape EU’s future #cohesionpolicy is carrying on and here we are presenting our positions at DG Regio together with other #european capital #cities and #regions #CCRN. To mention a few points, the Capital Cities and Regions Network #CCRN: i) are convinced that Cohesion policy needs to continue strengthening #economic , #social and #territorial cohesion for all regions and cities in the post-2027 programming period. ii) support a strong #urban and metropolitan dimension providing solutions for the development of sustainable and innovative urban areas (cities, including city centres, and their commuting zones). iii) believe that European territorial cooperation must remain a key objective of post-2027 cohesion policy. In the context of the full-scale invasion, the participation of Ukrainian cities in EU initiatives and programs, such as the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy and URBACT, is not only an opportunity but also an important step towards recovery and sustainable development. Access to these programs allows us to implement European practices in energy efficiency and good governance, which is critical to improving the quality of life in our communities. Having the opportunity to be heard by experts and join European initiatives is a chance for sustainable development and rebuilding of Ukrainian cities based on modern, environmentally friendly solutions.

Capacity-building activities for integrated urban planning and resources blending are key for the growth of European cities, but it's even more crucial for the cities of Ukraine and Moldova. The participation of cities such as Bilhorod, Myrhorod and Balti to the activities of the Cities-meet-Cities programme of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) is not just a sign of attention towards sustainability and energy efficiency, but it's a decisive element for reinforcing good governance as basis for reconstruction and connection with the European values and spirit. The insights shared by the cities during the visit to Cesis (Latvia) last week are aligned with the vision of URBACT and other EU programs, that are launching calls open to cities of Ukraine and Moldova. From the management of public spaces to night-time economy (one of the sectors mainly hit by Russia's war in Ukraine), the need for joining European networks of cities and projects is tangible: it's up to us as experts and leaders of these programs to foster the creation of connections which are going to have a positive impact on governance and quality of life in Ukrainian and Moldovan cities.

The Summer School “Researching Common Territories” is an international project realized by Coopera e.v. (DE), the European University Viadrina (DE), Tbilisi Architecture Biennial (GE), and One Caucasus Festival (GE), and funded by the Federal Foreign Office in the framework of the Eastern Partnership program. What does it mean to share a physical border? What kind of spaces emerge where various countries and their inhabitants share borders? The project «Researching Common Territories» aims to interact with adjacent spaces differently by conducting a series of field schools, workshops, study tours, and research on common border settings. After completing several field schools in various regions of Europe and beyond, the field research will be represented as a collective exhibition of findings, experiences, and encounters and will be shared with the public. The project primarily focuses on empowering civil society by providing them with the necessary skills to effectively advocate for SDG implementation at the national and local levels. This includes tasks such as writing Independent Reports and presenting the outcomes with recommendations at regional and international levels. In 2024 advocacy efforts are especially crucial for civic activists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as these governments are slated to submit their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) at the High-level Political Forum (HLPF), meeting under the auspices of the United Nations ECOSOC. #Coopera
