Here’s our 10th most read blog of 2024. 🚨The fossil fuel industry keeps pushing carbon capture as a key way to reduce emissions from its operations. But it’s a false solution that allows oil & gas companies to keep polluting. Carbon capture is super expensive, projects completed all vastly underperform and transporting carbon dioxide is dangerous as a leak can be deadly. Find out more ⤵️

This is an exceptionally well reported article about the reality of carbon capture and storage (CCS). In short - CCS does not work as marketed by the energy industry, and the oil companies know that. The idea that oil companies have been selling is that they can capture and store CO2 to offset emissions from the oil and coal they are selling. The reality is that the technology doesn’t do what they say it does - but it gives them cover to continue business as usual. It’s a long read, but well worth your time. https://lnkd.in/gs_Ua-D3

Today, we published our Scope 3 emissions calculation methodology. This document describes the methodology, organisational and operational boundaries, data sources and key assumptions used by Glencore to calculate and report Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For further information on the detailed calculations we have performed in connection with our emissions and energy consumption disclosures, please refer to our latest Annual and Sustainability Reports and Basis of Reporting, which are available on our website at glencore.com/publications. #Scope3 #emissions #decarbonisation #energytransition #climate

LONG BEACH, Calif., Dec. 31, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- California Resources Corporation (NYSE: CRC) and its carbon management business, Carbon TerraVault (CTV), today announced receipt of final Class VI well permits from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for underground injection and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the 26R reservoir, located at CRC’s Elk Hills Field in Kern County, California. The 26R reservoir is part of CTV’s joint venture with Brookfield. Another historic milestone for our project partners at California Resources Corporation and Brookfield! The Elk Hills Blue Hydrogen Project aims to be the first #bluehydrogen facility in the state; ultimately supporting the decarbonization of emissions-intensive sectors like transportation, refining, and power generation. https://lnkd.in/gBYEed2q We’re grateful for our partners at California Resources Corporation and Brookfield Renewable who share our vision of making a net zero energy economy a reality. #CRC #CarbonTerraVault #CarbonCapture #Energytransition #Hydrogen #BlueHydrogen #CleanEnergy #CaliforniaHydrogen #Decarbonization #Sustainability

NEW! We have published a statement on the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s final rule to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. Here's an excerpt from our statement from Coalition Executive Director Jessie Stolark: “The Coalition appreciates the administration’s publication of final rules to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from existing coal-fired and new natural gas power plants. While the final rule differs from the earlier proposed rule, we are pleased to see that the EPA continues to recognize carbon capture technologies as a key climate mitigation tool to reduce carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) and co-pollutants from coal and natural gas electric generating units." The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) recently released a report estimating that leaks, flaring, and venting of methane from U.S. onshore oil and gas operations amount to 7.5 million tonnes per year. https://lnkd.in/gssqJcpA This wasted gas could meet the annual energy needs of more than half of American homes, highlighting a significant and ongoing issue in the sector. The findings indicate that methane, a potent greenhouse gas, continues to be a major problem that is not being adequately addressed or resolved. Despite advancements in technology and increased regulatory efforts, the oil and gas industry still emits vast amounts of methane, which is far more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. This underscores the urgent need for better management practices and stricter regulations to mitigate these emissions. The EDF report calls for more rigorous enforcement and monitoring to ensure that the industry takes the necessary steps to reduce its methane footprint. At Synergy International, we strongly advocate for comprehensive strategies to tackle this issue head-on. The findings from EDF remind us that while some progress has been made, much more needs to be done to understand and resolve the methane problem effectively. We must continue to push for innovation and stricter policies to protect our environment. #Sustainability #MethaneEmissions #ClimateAction #GreenEnergy #SynergyInternational #EnvironmentalProtection

"Renoster gives the project a score of zero, which means it should not generate any carbon credits." " 'They are not at risk of deforestation and thus should not be receiving credits,' Renoster concludes." Finite Carbon is responsible for 25% of US carbon credits. It's majority owned by oil and gas giant BP. Many of its carbon credits come from trees that are not in danger of being cut down. New investigation by SourceMaterial and Floodlight. https://lnkd.in/eEtp6EfC

Oil Companies Know Carbon Capture Is Not a Climate Solution by Amy Westervelt CCS actually increases CO2 “Even when CCS powered by wind, 'if you just used wind to replace coal in the first place, you’d get a higher reduction in CO2" Here is a paper providing the numbers in detail showing how carbon capture and direct air capture, even powered by wind, increase CO2, air pollution, fossil mining, fossil infrastructure, and costs relative to using the wind simply to replace coal: https://lnkd.in/gvKPZH8 and another paper showing how using funds for wind to power battery electric vehicles reduces far more CO2, air pollution, land use, and costs than using the same money to purchase carbon capture equipment for ethanol refineries and a pipeline system: https://lnkd.in/ePgm96rC
