Key Initiatives and Contributions: Advocacy and Action: GlobalABC is instrumental in driving market transformation towards carbon neutrality in the built environment. Their active participation in COP conferences highlights the vital role of the construction sector in global climate initiatives. Progress Monitoring: Through tools like the annual Global Status Report and the Global Building Climate Tracker, GlobalABC meticulously tracks the decarbonization progress, aiding in the strategic planning towards 2030 and 2050 goals under the Marrakech Global Climate Action Partnership. Qatar’s Vision 2030: A Sustainable Future in the Face of Rapid Growth As Qatar continues to work toward its National Vision 2030, sustainability is taking center stage. In an ambitious bid to transform the country into a global competitor while maintaining a high standard of living for its citizens, Qatar is making significant strides to balance environmental, economic, and social development. However, one of the most pressing challenges facing the country is water scarcity—a problem not unique to Qatar but critical on a global scale. With the population growing and domestic water consumption on the rise, Qatar is now one of the highest per capita consumers of water in the world. This has led to increasing pressure on the country’s natural water resources, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable water management. In response, Qatar has launched innovative initiatives like the Water Mega Reservoirs project—an effort by state-owned Kahramaa to boost the nation’s water storage capacity. All Eyes on Saudi 🌍🌿 Saudi Arabia is once again at the forefront of environmental leadership! 🇸🇦🌳 Riyadh has been officially named the Arab Environment Capital for the next two years, solidifying its commitment to sustainability and environmental transformation, all aligned with the nation's ambitious Vision 2030. Here are some key accomplishments driving Saudi Arabia's green future: 🌱 Green Riyadh Initiative: With a goal to plant 7.5 million trees, Riyadh is transforming into a green oasis. This initiative is set to boost the city’s green cover from 1.5% to 9%, significantly increasing green space per capita and improving air quality by reducing carbon dioxide levels by up to 6%. 🌡️ Cooling Down the Capital: Through this initiative, Riyadh is also working to lower temperatures by 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius by 2030, creating a cooler and more sustainable urban environment. 🌍 King Salman Park: Soon to be the world's largest urban park, King Salman Park is a monumental project aimed at providing much-needed green space and a breath of fresh air in the bustling city. 💧 Leadership in the Arab Region: Saudi Arabia continues to lead by example with initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. In cooperation with (GIZ) Egypt and under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and the European Union, Competition Themes: The submitted project proposals must take into consideration the following criteria, on the basis of which the winning projects will be selected: - Directly addressing two key challenges: sustainable solid waste management and linking it to greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change impacts and circular economy principles. - Innovation: Following innovative methods in the approach, especially that includes Digital Transformation Technology - Feasibility: Show Realistic projects to investigate for local implementation in Governorates of Upper Egypt. - Sustainability: Highlight on the effects of the environment and the sustainability Compatible with Egypt’s vision 2030 and 2030 global agenda for sustainable development - Collaboration: between team members and between genders. “We listened to global policymakers last year at COP28 in Dubai. They seek to scale up investment in nature-based solutions but need to know how much these solutions cost and their economic benefits,” said ASLA CEO Torey Carter-Conneen, Hon. ASLA, CAE. “We now have some solid numbers that show landscape architects generate significant economic value through the way they design these solutions. But we’ll also start an ambitious research agenda to calculate the economic benefits we currently can’t measure.” The ASLA Fund has released a new brief on the economic benefits of landscape architecture and nature-based solutions. The brief is developed for global and U.S. economic policymakers meeting at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Dr. Jennifer Egan, PhD, program manager, University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center (EFC) in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, developed the brief. The EFC received a grant from the ASLA Fund to develop this analysis, which summarizes findings from research literature, national and international reports, and 175 case studies. For the first time, the #MiddleEast region will host the Conference of the Parties (#COP) to the UN Convention to Combat #Desertification. #COP16 will be held in #Riyadh, #SaudiArabia, from December 3-13, 2024. Members of the Arab Coordination Group (ACG) are mobilizing to contribute to the success of the conference and showcase their effective work. This week, The #OPEC Fund for International Development was held place in Vienna. “I had the privilege of addressing Forum members as the keynote speaker at the Gala Dinner. It was an invaluable opportunity to discuss the critical linkages between land, food, energy, fashion, mining, water, ecosystems and human well-being.” 🌱🌍🍽️ - Healthy #land is essential for #food production and security. 🔋🚜🌾 - Access to clean #energy for farmers is critical to reducing post-harvest losses. 🌿👗⛏️ - #Sustainable practices in #fashion and #mining are needed to mitigate #environmental damage. 🌍💧🔄 - The link between #land and #water underscores the importance of sustainable management.
