🔋 Investment costs alone cannot determine the commercial viability of energy storage technologies or their competitiveness against each other. The levelized cost of storage (LCOS) quantifies the overall cost per unit of discharged electricity for a storage technology serving a specific application. It takes all costs incurred during the lifetime and divides them by the cumulative delivered electricity. 💡 13 archetype applications can be identified, focusing on discharge duration and annual cycle frequency requirements. These applications create economic value through increasing power quality, power reliability, asset utilization, or arbitrage at different locations in the power system. The annual cycle and discharge duration requirements are chosen from within the common range of each application, such that the entire spectrum for these parameter combinations is represented. Annual cycles refer to full equivalent charge-discharge cycles. 🍃 Among the most interesting today are renewables integration, i.e., ESS fills a rare, unexpected, sustained gap between supply and demand, and frequency regulation, i.e., automatically correcting the continuous changes in supply or demand within the shortest market interval. 🔦 The technologies with the lowest LCOS and their explicit LCOS for all possible combinations of discharge duration and cycling frequency are shown in the figure, along with the possible applications. 1️⃣ Pumped hydro and compressed air are most cost-efficient for applications with more than 2 hours of discharge duration due to their relatively low energy-specific investment costs, i.e., renewable integration. On the other hand, 2️⃣ lithium-ion is most cost-efficient in applications with below 2 hours of discharge and below 300 cycles per year, i.e., frequency regulation. 3️⃣ Hydrogen is suitable for a low number of discharges with large amounts of energy, i.e., seasonal storage. It is likely that as lithium-ion technology and manufacturing mature, more applications will fall into its category, and pumped hydro will recede due to the limited supply. Industry players like steel manufacturers and coal power generators are facing trouble with generating energy, due to the water scarcity in India. A report released by Moody’s states that from the heavy reliance on water in coal power and steel manufacturing, per capita water availability is projected to heavily decrease by 2031. The report also emphasises the initiatives taken by the Indian government, with measures to enhance water infrastructure and promote renewable energy. #waterscarcity #savewater #India #renewableenergy #fuelflipenergy

NTPC to Invest ₹30,000 Crs on Transmission System in Andhra Pradesh for Green H2 NTPC Green plans to invest ₹30,000 crore in developing a transmission network to support Andhra Pradesh's Green Hydrogen Hub. This 20 GW network separate from the national power grid will facilitate the distribution of Green Hydrogen within the region. The Hub spans across 1,600 acres targets to produce upto 1500 tonnes of Green H2 every day. This 20 GW transmission system is to be set by 2032. Story Insights by Bhavya Rai NTPC Green's recent announcement to invest ₹30,000 crore in developing Andhra Pradesh's Green Hydrogen Hub marks a significant step towards India's clean energy transition. The development of a transmission network for green hydrogen is crucial for facilitating the distribution of this clean energy source. As industries like steel, cement, chemicals, and refineries aim to decarbonize their operations, a robust and dedicated infrastructure is necessary to support the production and distribution of green hydrogen. This initiative, which is India’s first purpose-built network, could act as a precursor to large-scale hydrogen energy storage projects in the nation. By creating this dedicated renewable energy system, the transmission network will help India achieve its renewable energy targets and reduce its carbon footprint. This project not only strengthens India's energy security but also opens up opportunities for industries to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change. Key industries that will benefit include the energy sector, manufacturing, heavy industries like steel and cement, transportation, infrastructure development, and technology and innovation firms. These industries will find new applications, improve operational efficiencies, and gain a competitive edge in the global market. Publication Alert! I am excited to share our latest research article , "A Techno-Economic Analysis of a Hybrid Microgrid System in a Residential Area of Bangladesh: Optimizing Renewable Energy," published in Sustainability (Q2, IF-3.3). The study investigates the feasibility of a grid-connected hybrid system, integrating photovoltaics (PV), biomass, and wind energy in Pabna, Bangladesh. Our findings show that a PV–biomass generator system offers the lowest cost of energy (USD 0.0232) and significantly reduces CO2 emissions. This research highlights the economic and environmental benefits of adopting hybrid renewable energy systems in addressing Bangladesh's energy crisis. #RenewableEnergy #Microgrid #Sustainability #EnergyTransition https://lnkd.in/d2xEgxi6
