❤️🩹 Two days ago, Thailand became the first Southeast Asian nation to legalize same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, we are not there yet in Singapore. So today, we bring the focus back home to Singapore, where the mental health challenges and risk factors faced by the LGBTQ+ community are just as present and urgent to address. 🌈 The Safe Space Foundation (TSSF) empowers and supports the LGBTQ+ community by providing resources and key support for their mental well-being. We have also conducted a survey and interviews with members of the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies, including 5 Safe Space therapists. With the help of both respondents and Safe Space therapists, we have compiled a white paper identifying potential factors influencing the mental health of the LGBTQIA+ community. You may access the white paper here: https://lnkd.in/gkErfvnS #PrideMonth #MentalHealthMatters #LGBTQSupport #LoveIsLove #CelebrateDiversity #SelfCare #YouAreNotAlone #DonateNow #Fundraiser #VolunteerOpportunity #VolunteerSG #CommunityMatters #MakeADifference #ASafeSpaceForAll #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthSG #TheSafeSpaceFoundation

From a young age, many of us are taught that only biological families are “real” or “valid,” but this perspective overlooks the true essence of family. Adoption is a powerful act of love that should be celebrated, not overshadowed by outdated stereotypes and myths. Adoption offers children a second chance at having a loving home and has been shown to improve outcomes in education, emotional health and social relationships. It’s not just for heterosexual couples; LGBTQ+ couples, single people, and those with disabilities can also provide the safe, nurturing environment every child deserves. Despite misconceptions about adoption being difficult or risky, many families successfully navigate the process with the help of available resources and support systems. It's time to challenge the stigma and focus on the positive impact adoption has on lives. Let’s share accurate information, reduce fear and create a supportive environment for all adoptive families. Together, we can make adoption a more accessible and joyful path for everyone involved. "Advocates question whether the first-of-its-kind law is in a child’s best interest." Um, spoiler alert: It absolutely isn't. The Trevor Project issued a report in 2022 using data from the 2021 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health. Some key takeaways: • 16% of LGBTQ youth reported they had slept away from parents or caregivers because they ran away from home, with more than half (55%) reporting that they ran away from home because of mistreatment or fear of mistreatment due to their LGBTQ identity. • 14% of LGBTQ youth reported that they had slept away from parents or caregivers because they were kicked out or abandoned, with 40% reporting that they were kicked out or abandoned due to their LGBTQ identity. • LGBTQ youth in the sample who reported housing instability or homelessness had nearly two to four times the odds of reporting depression, anxiety, self-harm, contemplation of suicide, or suicide attempts compared to those who did not report housing instability. The data goes on, and I'll link the report in the comments. LGBTQ youth already experience worse mental health outcomes than their straight, cis counterparts. Knowingly putting at-risk youth in an unsupportive household is unconscionable.

Today is the inaugural 988 Day to raise awareness of 988, the national suicide crisis hotline. Did you know that autistic individuals are 9 times more likely to die by suicide, while also being far less likely to receive the support they need when in crisis? That’s because while the current suicide prevention system offers specialized support for high-risk groups like veterans and the LGBTQ+ community, it falls short of addressing the unique needs of autistic individuals, including differences in communication and sensory triggers. As someone on the spectrum, I can tell you firsthand how critical this issue is. That's why I'm launching Project 988, to raise awareness now and begin building a suicide crisis support hotline for autistic individuals. We cannot afford to overlook this glaring oversight any longer—lives depend on it. Stay tuned for updates, and join me in pushing for change. Together, we can make a difference. #988Day #Project988 #AutismAwareness #MentalHealth #CrisisSupport

LGBTQ+ youth deserve to be supported and affirmed, whether in their families or foster care. Yet, while progress has been made, there are still harmful attacks on LGBTQ+ people and in particular, trans youth. As we near 2025, it is crucial that policies recognize and respect LGBTQ+ identities and eliminate harmful policies and practices. Research shows that affirming homes, schools, and communities help LGBTQ+ youth thrive. Sadly, many face barriers, especially in foster care, where 30% identify as LGBTQ+. It's time to ensure LGBTQ+ youth have access to supportive, inclusive services and environments. The federal government has made strides in protecting LGBTQ+ youth, including banning conversion therapy and ensuring access to gender-affirming care. However, we must continue to build on this momentum and ensure LGBTQ+ youth have access to affirming support, especially in foster care. It’s crucial we reject harmful policies and invest in inclusive communities that support all children’s well-being. Learn more about affirming LGBTQ+ youth and building strategies for communities and child welfare systems in this blog by CSSP Senior Associate, Alexandra Citrin. https://lnkd.in/gsu-pY4R #CSSP5for2025 #lgbtqia #genderaffirmingcare #mentalhealthmatters #wellness
