Last Friday, we were celebrating the World Press Freedom Day, but today news are different: a troubling development for press freedom, the Israeli cabinet has taken steps to shut down Al Jazeera's local operations. This decision raises serious concerns about the state of media freedom and democracy in the region. Despite being a fundamental pillar of democracy, press freedom continues to face threats worldwide. Actions like these not only undermine the free flow of information but also restrict public access to diverse perspectives crucial for informed decision-making. Amidst these challenges, it becomes increasingly imperative to defend and uphold the principles of press freedom. Access to independent and unbiased journalism is essential, especially in addressing complex issues like climate change. As we navigate these turbulent times, let's reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding press freedom and ensuring that the voices of journalists and media outlets remain free from censorship and intimidation. On this World Press Freedom Day 2024, under the theme "A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis," it's imperative to recognize the critical role journalists play. The climate and biodiversity crises are not just environmental issues; they affect the lives of billions worldwide. The stories of upheaval and loss resulting from these crises deserve to be known and shared, even if they're not easy to watch. Exposing the crisis is the first step to finding solutions. Journalists work tirelessly on the frontlines of our collective fight for a healthier planet and livable lives. Their courage and perseverance enable us to understand what's happening across the globe. They bring attention to environmental degradation, climate disasters, and their impacts on communities. Their work empowers us to take action and demand accountability from those in power. 🧐 How is the #environmental crisis challenging #PublicServiceMedia? 🚨 This #WorldPressFreedomDay, we speak to leading public service media about how they’re facing up to the environmental crisis, in their journalism and their organisations. We hear from Public Television Service Foundation about how they have to deal with a lack of transparency when trying to hold authorities to account over their climate obligations, or from CBC and Radio-Canada about the difficulties that come when covering a country as vast and diverse as Canada. 💡 But we also consider how #PSM is innovating in the face of the challenge... including a look at Belgium’s RTBF, where they have developed “a new production tool: a mobile production unit that is light, robust, and low on electricity consumption, mounted on a trailer and pulled by an electric bicycle."
