#GridScaleBatteries #CoalPowerPlantClosings #RenewableEnergy #Australia #WesternAustralia #Synergy #GenusPlusGroup #KwinanaBatteryEnergyStorageSystemStage2 #KBESS2 #ContemporaryAmperexTechnology #CATL #PowerElectronics #SouthWestInterconnectedSystem #SWIS "Perth-headquartered, state-owned gentailer Synergy in collaboration with Western Australia (WA) infrastructure provider GenusPlus Group have completed the 200 MW / 800 MWh Kwinana battery energy storage system Stage 2 (KBESS2), located 30 kilometres southwest of Perth. Feeding into the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) both stages of Kwinana will power 450,000 Perth households for up to four hours, with KBESS2 providing over four times the storage capacity of the 150 MW KBESS1. WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby said the government’s promise of clean, affordable, and reliable power is being kept. “It won’t just soak up excess rooftop solar and onshore wind during the day – it will provide electricity in the evening, when the sun doesn’t shine, and the wind doesn’t blow,” Whitby said. “As we continue to retire state-owned coal-fired power, large-scale storage will play a critical role in enabling a smooth transition and backs in households seeking to benefit from rooftop solar.” The $661 million (USD 427.6 million) KBESS2 comprises 288 containerised China-headquartered Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL) liquid-cooling lithium ion phosphate (LFP) batteries. The 72 inverters are provided by Spain-headquartered Power Electronics and the project is connected to utility Western Power’s 330 kV transmission system via existing infrastructure at the adjacent KBESS1. Work on the Kwinana battery project began in July 2023 and the battery is expected to be switched on before Christmas 2024, contributing to the WA government’s bid to close coal-fired power generators by 2030 and replace them with renewables. WA Premier Roger Cook said the Kwinana big batteries will play a vital role in keeping the state’s energy system reliable and stable, while bringing on more renewable energy and phasing out coal by 2030. “We’re smashing renewable energy records because of our Labor Government’s significant investment into the energy transition,” Cook said. KBESS1 AND KBESS2 join Neoen’s 560 MW / 2,240 MWh battery unit in Collie, 200 kilometres south of Perth, and as well as Synergy’s Collie BESS, due to come online next year, 187 kilometres south of Perth. WA broke a renewable energy record on 17 November 2024, when 85.1% of electricity was generated by renewables, up from 14% in 2017 and 34% in 2023."

Transgrid has contracted the Riverina and Darlington Point BESS to provide up to 120MW of additional #capacity to a constrained section of the #network, all without building new #transmission infrastructure. The facilities will provide #voltagesupport services to Transgrid, allowing additional #renewable #energy to be delivered to customers in time for the warmer months when #solargeneration ramps up as the days get longer. The services provided by the combined 150MW/300MWh lithium-ion #battery, owned by Federation Asset Management and Edify Energy, will also provide flexibility in the planning of future network augmentations including the South West Renewable Energy Zone (#REZ) and nation-critical #VNIWest project. Transgrid Executive General Manager of Network, Marie Jordan, said the utility is going beyond the traditional poles and wires approach and seeking innovative, faster and lower-cost alternatives to increase system #stability and #reliability and keep #energyprices as low as possible for #consumers. The contracted non-network solution is Transgrid’s first to come into service, with more expected to follow in other parts of New South Wales.

GridBeyond is set to deliver Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions to Keppel DC Dublin 1 and 2, situated in City West and Ballycoolin, Ireland, respectively. The data centres are owned by Keppel DC REIT , a Singapore-listed data centre real estate investment trust. The BESS installations aim to enhance the power system’s flexible capacity, facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources and supporting the grid during peak stress periods. This initiative will contribute an additional 8 MW of flexible capacity ahead of the winter peak demand. “This project shows how data centres can play a bigger role in the energy transition,” said Denver Blemings, GridBeyond Regional Director for Ireland. “It’s great to see companies, like Keppel DC REIT, use demand response programmes to support the grid and use renewable energies in the delivery of their activities.” The two BESS projects comprise a 2 x 2MW/2.2MWh battery at the Citywest site and a 4MW/6.1MWh battery at the Ballycoolin site. GridBeyond will oversee the flexibility management of these sites through its AI-powered energy technology platform, GridBeyond Point. Gary Watson, Country Manager (Ireland) of Keppel DC REIT, added: “Leveraging this partnership with GridBeyond, Keppel DC REIT’s is able to take another step towards our 2030 net zero targets. “We will also explore other ways to increase the use of renewable energy, such as installing on-site solar, to bolster our efforts to decarbonise our operations.” #cleanenergy
