Is Boxing Day Shopping in the U.K. Becoming a Thing of the Past as Consumers become Increasingly E-commerce Saavy? 🛒🎁📉 🤔 Boxing Day footfall in the UK continues to decline, with overall retail destinations down -7.6% when comparing 2024 to 2023. Specifically for key retail footfall areas the numbers make for sobering reading: • High Streets: -9.6% • Shopping Centres: -5.1% • Retail Parks: -6.1% Perhaps more striking, is the fact that in-store visits are now 20.5% below pre-pandemic levels, signaling a major shift in consumer behavior toward online shopping during traditional sales periods. This aligns to what we saw with usage of transport networks such as the #London underground. People are preferring digital means to go about work and life, prioritising time for self and for family or friends and may also be finding better seasonal deals pre Christmas. Especially when #BlackFriday started on #Halloween this year. 👻 Even major retailers like #JohnLewis, #MandS and #Next kept much of their store footprint closed on Boxing Day, prioritizing staff well-being over profits on the post-Christmas trade. This is also because wages on bank holiday 26th are double-treble and with the multi year decline, retailers see the data which helped keep many physical stores closed on #boxingday This isn’t just about sales—it’s about changing priorities and evolving consumer shopping habits. Is this the new normal for retail? #RetailTrends #ConsumerBehavior #digitalcommerce #BoxingDay #Ecommerce #RetailInnovation #OnlineCommerce

Boxing Day is spreading and we are starting to see the post-Xmas promotional event trickle into the US. A few takeaways: ➡️ More promotions this year across stores, online and social shopping sites. Customers are digital first and doing the research before they spend. ➡️ Mastercard's #SpendingPulse: total US sales grew by 3.8%, holiday spending reaching record levels. The year is not quite over...we will see a huge lift from the last few days. ➡️ GST/HST break allows for immediate savings for Canadians. They are taking advantage of the tax break and hitting the malls. ➡️ Boxing Day cheat sheets are trending on TikTok, luring more customers to spend across all categories. ➡️ Customers are buying more, not spending more per item. Basket sizes have increased because the customer is getting better deals. Thanks to CTV News for having me on the show today. 🏷️ Are you shunning or shopping the sales today? I spoke to the BBC about how Boxing Day has lost its shine. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still an important day on the retail calendar but so much spending has shifted online with deals starting as early as Christmas Eve! Also interesting how more and more shops are choosing to remain closed today (a pandemic silver lining?) Retailers would only ever shut stores if it made clear business sense. In this case, the benefits of rewarding staff far outweigh any in-store trading. It’s a tight labour market and retailers are competing for talent. In addition to significant uplifts in hourly pay, retailers are also sweetening the deal with things like flexible scheduling and additional benefits for frontline staff. Keeping stores closed on Boxing Day is just another way to show employees that they are valued. Also - promotion fatigue! When you consider that some Black Friday deals began on Halloween this year, which is the earliest I’ve ever seen, it’s no surprise that we’re all shopped out by Boxing Day. Shoppers will likely check out the deals online, but promotion fatigue will stop many from hitting the high street. What do you think? #retail #boxingday #ukretail #sales #consumer #highstreets

Did you buy three Christmas gift options for your partner/child/parent/friend in a panic, landing on one gift and planning to return the other two. You're not alone. After a hectic run to Christmas, Boxing Day sees most retailers gear up for the onslaught of product returns. This behaviour, known as "bracketing", is one of the reasons why returns have increased from 8% to 16% in just five years among US retailers. However the tide is starting to turn, with many brands now trying to make the act of returning an item difficult for the customer.
