After COP is before COP. The end of COP29 Azerbaijan reminded us, once more, of the urgent road ahead as we need to massively scale up investments and commitments #ForNature. As we look towards next year's #COP30, it is all the more critical to tackle the interconnected threats of #ClimateChange, #BiodiversityLoss & #LandDegradation together, instead of in isolation. 🤝 Our new report, supporting the work of the High-Level Climate Champions, highlights through 4 case studies from #Brazil, #Indonesia, #Nepal & #Spain how adept #NonStateActors – businesses, research institutes, NGOs etc. – are at fostering synergies between the goals of the #RioConventions. Scaling up their initiatives is key for our future. Read the full report now to learn more: https://bit.ly/3CLS7dq #RacetoZero #RacetoResilience Thomas W. It is the third year BSSS has attended the COP climate summit under our official non-governmental organisation (NGO) observer status. We previously highlighted how our attendance at #COP28 marked a step change in our engagement with stakeholders at the event. This was achieved through dedicated hosting and participation at key events and discussions during the COP programme. It was estimated that around 100,000 people attended COP28. A huge audience with a myriad of topics being discussed and debated. But our sense was soils had leapt up the agenda, being explicitly discussed as a critical part of solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation, water, #biodiversity, equity, and community. Our involvement, whilst individually small, is part of a large community dedicated to finding #sustainable solutions. Having had the chance to reflect on the impact we had, President, Jacqueline Hannam, and Past-President, Bruce Lascelles, highlight their thoughts and the space #soils filled at COP28. https://lnkd.in/eb7gHSxC

🌍 Why so many COPs? We often hear about COPs (Conferences of the Parties) as if they were an exclusive club of countries discussing environmental issues, but what does it really mean? Why are there so many summits, and why are they essential, even when it sometimes feels like progress is too slow? COPs are key moments where nations come together to discuss, negotiate, and make commitments on global issues. These summits arise from international agreements. They set collective goals, measure our progress, and create a framework for concrete actions. Of course, nothing is perfect! Bureaucracy and lobbying can sometimes hinder progress. But these conferences remain crucial because they put pressure on governments, align global policies, and give a voice to civil society. 🌱 COP in Cali: The Major Biodiversity Gathering (October 21 - November 1, 2024) The COP16 Biodiversity in Cali is a significant event because it will be the first implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Framework, adopted in 2022 during COP15. This framework has the ambitious goal of protecting 30% of the planet’s lands and oceans by 2030. The Cali COP will be where countries present their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and their action plans to achieve these objectives. The event will focus on several key points: - Concrete commitments: Each country must come prepared with specific projects and commitments on how it plans to protect its ecosystems. - Financing: Climate finance plays a crucial role in this process. Countries will need to discuss innovative financing mechanisms to support biodiversity preservation initiatives, especially in developing nations. This financial support is essential to ensure that the strategies developed translate into tangible actions on the ground. - Discussions will include initiatives to create biodiversity corridors, which are essential for the movement and survival of species. This COP represents a unique opportunity to accelerate global efforts for biodiversity. Moreover, it aims to involve civil society and youth more actively in the decision-making process. 🌍 And after Cali? The calendar is packed: - COP29 Climate in Baku (November 2024): Discussions will focus on climate finance and adaptation, with an emphasis on the energy transition. - COP16 Desertification in Riyadh (December 2024): This is the time to focus on combating land degradation and droughts. Each COP has its role in this big puzzle. While criticisms are often heard, these meetings are essential for establishing international collaborations, sharing solutions, and activating real change. So, stay tuned and be optimistic about the future! 🌿 Pic: jaguar in Belize - Alix Willemez #COP16 #Biodiversity #ClimateFinance #Sustainability #Environment #ClimateAction @UNBiodiversity @UNFCCC @WorldResourcesInst @IUCN @WWF @Greenpeace @GlobalEnvironmentalFacility Sonia Borrini Maxime Blondeau
