🌟 We’re pleased to share that Fernando Vasco Chironda, EAPN Policy and Advocacy Officer, attended yesterday's MEP breakfast at the European Parliament. The event focused on CSO priorities for new MEPs regarding EU migration policies. 🔶 As EAPN, we stated that social rights should be better mainstreamed within the new Pact on Migration and that MS should better investigate the non-take up rate of migrants while accessing social protection schemes. 🙌This breakfast was a great opportunity to connect grassroots civil society organisations with progressive MEPs, building solidarity and discussing key challenges and priorities for the new mandate. 🤝With the new Pact and upcoming discussions on the Facilitator’s Package, building solidarity and alliances is more important than ever. #EAPN #Humanrights #Policy #Migration #MEPBreakfast #CivilSociety

[News] On 29 April 2024, the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa, organised an essential workshop focusing on early warning and urgent response to xenophobic violence. This workshop, part of our broader anti-xenophobia project, aimed to strengthen the protection of migrants' rights, especially in the context of the upcoming South African elections. Xenophobic violence often spikes during election periods due to inflammatory rhetoric. This workshop was timely, fostering critical discussions and network-building among grassroots organizations, migrant-led groups, and rights advocates. We were honoured to have contributions from Prof Frans Viljoen and Ms Shireen Mukadam, emphasising the need for collaborative efforts and empirical evidence in our interventions. Key takeaways included the importance of reshaping narratives about migrants, enhancing legal frameworks, and coordinating advocacy efforts. The Centre for Human Rights remains committed to these goals and will continue to advocate for a robust early warning and urgent response mechanism. #HumanRights #Xenophobia #MigrantsRights #EarlyWarning #CommunityEngagement #Advocacy Read more: https://lnkd.in/d4YhKSae

On #InternationalMigrantDay, we reaffirm that migration is a fundamental human right and a pathway to new opportunities. However, the asylum system fails to protect the rights and safety of FGM survivors and women and girls still at risk. ⚖️ There is an urgent need for collective action to create a fair, gender-sensitive, and culturally-aware asylum system. Let’s ensure that every woman and girl has access to the healthcare, protection, and support they deserve. 💪🏽💙 Read our report on The Impact of Asylum Laws, Policies, and Practices on FGM-Affected Women and Girls in Europe here: https://lnkd.in/dqegVKf9 and our Position Paper on the provision of support services, including healthcare and counselling, for survivors of FGM: https://lnkd.in/ef-9cmhy #endfgm #safemigration #migrantrights #womenandgirls #humanrights #fgmprevention

How can we allow this? Have we forgotten the principles and values the EU once declared to be “fundamental” for its existence? What happened to freedom, human dignity, equality, non-discrimination, tolerance? What happened to the rule of law? Have we forgotten the key objectives the European Union was built on? What happened to promoting peace and security? Our history taught us better, nevertheless, ignorance prevails. I am shocked, I am saddened, I am angry. As a student, not having much money and yet supporting organizations and projects that drive for sustainable positive change, but seeing things worsening, leaves me extremely frustrated. It’s ironic: We preach solidarity and at the same time attack desperate individuals seeking asylum from horrors we're too young to imagine. Crises we’re causing. Conflicts we’re financing. How is this social justice? How is this protection? How is this protecting human rights? Don’t for a second think that this is doing the EU any good. We need to stop this. We need to counteract xenophobia. We need to keep pushing for what matters: HUMAN RIGHTS #EUMigrationPact

The relationship between migrants and police in Morocco is marked by tension and mistrust, with migrants often facing harsh and exploitative treatment, including the confiscation of personal belongings during arrests. To improve this relationship, collaboration between police and migrant communities is essential. Policy reforms, enhanced human rights training for police, and increased transparency are critical steps. Additionally, community engagement programs and legal protection for migrants can help foster mutual respect and understanding, contributing to a more inclusive and just society for all residents. #MigrationMatters #HumanRights #CommunityEngagement #PolicyReform #MigrantRights #Inclusivity #MutualRespect #SocialJustice #PoliceReform #Transparency #LegalProtection #MoroccoMigrants #EmpowerCommunities #SafeMigration
