Ever noticed how even when there's solid science backing up new ways to treat or prevent diseases, it takes a while for the medical community to get on board? Access to research isn't always enough to get these ideas into everyday practice. There are all sorts of things that get in the way, like getting the word out to practitioners and dealing with personal biases that can slow down the adoption of new methods. As dental pros, it's on us to keep up with the latest research and techniques and team up with our peers to make sure we're giving our patients the best care possible. Source: Scannapieco, F. To clarify, we used mice with a specific GH gene knockout and found that both males and females had extended lifespans solely due to GH deficiency. Physiological assessments showed these mice were lighter, had higher body fat percentages, and exhibited impaired glucose metabolism. Our results strongly indicate that GH deficiency directly impacts nutrient utilization and contributes to increased lifespan. Image Credits: Aging Cell, Wiley journal

UNDERSTANDING HYPERTENSION IN THE GERIATRIC DEMOGRAPHIC As we age it is understood that a host of physiological adaptations/changes occur impacting a variety of functions, directly affecting all bodily systems. One of the greatest impacted systems is our cardiovasular system. In the aging process, our bodies loose a great amount of elasticity, resulting in stiffness, including our arteries. This arterial stiffness known as arteriosclerosis, has a direct impact on elevated blood pressure readings. When blood flows through these stiffened arteries, it does require more force on the part of the heart, for adequate circulation. Also, the prevelance of atherosclerosis, which is caused by an accumilation of plaque build-up on artery walls, results in the development of arteriosclerosis which in turn too results in hypertensive reading. While unfortunately the aging process (and the direct physiological changes associated with it) cannot be reversed, a healthy lifestyle of a heart-healthy diet and regular physical activity can help slow the progression and the severity of succumbing to these age-related modifications. #gerontology #seniorfitness #geriatrics #seniorhealth #activeaging
