🌟 National Water Safety Week 🌟 As a swimming and water safety educator, I am continuously looking for ways to spread awareness about water safety, especially to children and families. During my recent holiday in Phuket, Thailand, I encountered a comprehensive water safety sign that I found to be an excellent educational tool. This sign is particularly relevant as we observe National Water Safety Week in Australia. Here's how I would utilise such a sign in my teaching: 1. Multilingual Education: The sign's multilingual approach is something I would incorporate into my teaching materials. This ensures that children from diverse backgrounds can understand and follow safety instructions. 2. Understanding Local Hazards: Just as the sign warns of specific dangers such as strong currents and slippery rocks, I emphasise the importance of being aware of the local aquatic environment. 3. Visual Learning: The use of universal symbols on the sign is a strategy I use in my lessons. Visual cues are especially effective for young children and those with language barriers. 4. Engagement with Parents: I would share this sign on platforms like LinkedIn to educate parents on water safety, mirroring the client relations skills I've honed while interacting with parents and managing feedback at Just Swimming. 5. Practical Application: During National Water Safety Week, we can organise beach visits and practical lessons, using signs similar to the one in Phuket to guide our young swimmers on how to spot and understand water safety flags and signs. #watersafety #staysafearoundwater ⚠️🌊🛟🏊♀️

Special thanks to Lifesaving Society Canada for hosting another amazing webinar “Setting the Bar: Navigating and Implementing Lifesaving Society Standards” and great presentations by Sean Duffy (Ontario Vice President Management Training) and Brian Connors (National Standards Commissioner) explained how Lifesaving Society develops Safety Standards to enhance safety in aquatic facilities at national and provincial levels, SSC process approval map for standards development, the cycle of standards review, and commonly used references. It was great to know that Life Saving Society Ontario has an eye on the use of emerging technologies for drowning detection in swimming pools as an extra layer of safety, and hope to hear more in the future about regulating the use of emerging technologies in swimming pools as part of national safety standards in Canada. Great to work with Matamata-Piako District Council on this project ensuring a cost-effective solution was provided to enable year-round aquatic provision to continue in the district. As a region, like many across the New Zealand, the Waikato suffers from aged infrastructure (average age of community pools are 45+ years with school pools being 60 years) and limited suitable year-round provision to aquatic spaces highlighting that extensive planning is needed to ensure we have adequate aquatic space to meet the needs of our future generations. This will take time and significant investment; therefore, we must ensure we continue to maintain current provision, especially in communities like Matamata where community pools are a fabric of the community and usually the only spaces where our children can learn lifelong lessons such as water safety. https://lnkd.in/dNx4maJf
