Special thanks to Lifesaving Society Canada for hosting another amazing webinar “Setting the Bar: Navigating and Implementing Lifesaving Society Standards” and great presentations by Sean Duffy (Ontario Vice President Management Training) and Brian Connors (National Standards Commissioner) explained how Lifesaving Society develops Safety Standards to enhance safety in aquatic facilities at national and provincial levels, SSC process approval map for standards development, the cycle of standards review, and commonly used references. It was great to know that Life Saving Society Ontario has an eye on the use of emerging technologies for drowning detection in swimming pools as an extra layer of safety, and hope to hear more in the future about regulating the use of emerging technologies in swimming pools as part of national safety standards in Canada. 👇🏼Definitely worth 30mins of your time and reflection with Kurt Cordice presenting on Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Drowning Prevention and Aquatics.
Last week, I presented at the WAVES aquatic industry conference in Lower Hutt, Aotearoa New Zealand, once again hosted by the crew from Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga. My presentation is now uploaded and available via the link below. This presentation highlights the international call to action for prioritising Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) in drowning prevention, and its relevance here in Aotearoa New Zealand. The call to action was put forward by the delegates of the World Conference on Drowning Prevention in Perth (2023). This was my 5th WAVES conference (including the infamous COVID lockdown year), and my 5th presentation. My attendance and presentations over the years have focused on bringing both ‘Ethnic’ representation and greater advocacy for wider J.E.D.I. to aquatic industries in Aotearoa New Zealand. Has the needle moved? Well, it depends on your perspective. Mentioned in this talk: Water Safety New Zealand, Tangaroa Ararau, Ngati Porou SLS SLSC, Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley, Daniel Gerrard, Peter Boyd, Justin Scarr, Jagnoor Jagnoor, Life Saving Victoria, Canadian Red Cross, Tauranga City Council, Welcoming Australia, Simon Sinek, Merge NZ. Attention: Drowning Prevention Auckland, Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Coastguard New Zealand, Maritime New Zealand, Swimming New Zealand, Ed Accura, The Black Swimming Association (BSA), Diversity In Aquatics https://lnkd.in/gBMmMmzT

Elevated levels of harmful bacteria have been found at Wales’ first official river bathing site. Wild swimmers have been advised to stay out of the River Wye at The Warren, a pebble beach near Hay-on-Wye, Powys, after high levels of E.coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria were found. The levels of both bacteria found were five and seven times higher respectively than the lowest quality standard considered "sufficient". Mr Bullough, of campaign group Friends of the River Wye, said: "These two bacteria are tested for because they are markers of the presence of sewage.”. Welsh Water said: “We are committed to playing our part to help protect river water quality. This is why we have invested £53m over the past 12 months on seven schemes to help improve the quality of the River Wye, which have all been completed ahead of schedule.”. #Water #Pollution #WaterPollution #Rivers #Environment #World #UK This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. As we dive into Water Safety Month, let’s ensure our swimming areas are up to code and safe for everyone. In Haines City, we prioritize your safety with specific requirements for residential pools: 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Keep your pools clean, sanitary, and in good repair. 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: All pools deeper than 24 inches must have barriers at least 48 inches tall, with self-closing and self-latching gates to prevent unsupervised access. 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: Florida law requires residential pools to have at least one safety feature, such as a pool barrier that isolates the pool from the home, alarms on doors and windows that access the pool, or an approved pool cover. Remember, these measures are not just recommendations—they are requirements designed to prevent accidents and save lives. Let's make sure our swimming experiences are both fun and safe! Great news! Real-time water quality monitors are being installed at #wildswimming spots in Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire, and two coastal sites in Bournemouth. The #artificialintelligence-based monitoring system is designed to help people assess immediate risk of getting ill from water polluted with bacteria. Quoted in The Guardian, Ruth Barden, Director of Environmental Solutions at Wessex Water and Visiting Industrial Fellow at the University of Bath Institute for Sustainability, said "One of the biggest criticisms of the current bathing water classification system is that people may be swimming at a location all year, and it is only when the final classification is published that they realise what the quality has been. “We want people to be able to enjoy and use their watercourses without putting themselves in danger. But collecting this data is also helpful for us to understand what level of impact our assets are having on water quality – if any – and what the solutions could be to rectify that.” 👉 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/g-YMwEw7 #pollution #swimming #rivers #ai

All over the world, most government waterway strategies, plans, overviews and reports have something in common. There is little on-the-water activity data being utilised to help inform decision making and measure strategic objectives. Next week I look forward to debriefing the Australia and New Zealand Safe Boating Education Group and the Australian Recreational Boating Safety Committee on how anonymised, aggregated boating activity data can be leveraged to make waterways safer. It's energising to see that regulators are increasingly keen to engage with industry to explore the challenge of harnessing new data sources to enhance insights on boating activity and waterway use.

While the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) may not be required in your state, it is the standard of care in the industry. The MAHC has some great guideline around minimum initial and ongoing training for your team! Pre-Service (before your team takes the stand) should include site-specific policies and procedures including lifeguard zones, rotations, minimum staffing and EAPS, a demonstration of site-specific safety skills, review of facility & attraction rules, and verification of skills proficiency. You should also have a solid in-service plan in place that includes how often your team will train, how you're tracking certifications, and opportunities for your team to demonstrate test-ready skills. Don't forget to DOCUMENT the 3 Ws - who attended, when was training held, and what did you cover! And always remember that your local or state codes may require additional training! For more information on the MAHC, visit cmahc.org! #Swimming #WaterWatcherbyAOAP #SwimSafe #WaterSafety #DrowningPrevention #PoolSafety #SwimSmart #AOAP #mahc #cmahc
