Twenty-nine percent of high-school seniors submitted the Fafsa as of March 1, compared with 45% at that time last year, according to the National College Attainment Network, an advocate of increased college enrollment. The decline was even steeper among students from low-income high schools.

Tuition Resets: Private colleges like Bethel University, Wartburg College, and Concordia University Texas have significantly reduced tuition (up to 62%) to attract students amid declining enrollment. Boost in Enrollment: Bethel reported a 40% increase in visits and doubled attendance at recruiting events, while Millikin University saw a 12% rise in enrollment and a 47% increase in transfer students after tuition cuts. Challenges: While tuition resets can temporarily boost numbers, the strategy may fail long-term. Mills College, for example, closed three years after a reset. Widening Divide: Elite institutions maintain high costs near $100,000/year, leveraging brand value, while smaller schools face growing scrutiny over affordability. Long-Term Viability: Colleges like Millikin aim to balance accessibility and sustainability by retaining students and engaging local communities. #HigherEducation #TuitionCuts #EnrollmentCrisis #PrivateColleges
