The theoretical concept of Structural Empowerment (SE) was fully developed, along with Pyschological Empowerment, by Dr. Rosabeth Kanter in 1977 and again in 1993. Organizations like Magnet have figured out that providing 4 key SE accesses can develop both formal and informal power for employees. Providing access to resources, information, support, and opportunity is the roots to many types of leadership development and employee engagement programs over the past several decades. My research has shown that when people, especially in healthcare, have access to help when needed, their intent to stay is higher.
