Excellent Customer Service (and Quality Donor Stewardship for that matter) is not about spending lots of money or wasting hours of time - it is about thoughtful, personalized attention. Here is a great example …
This past week #Abilene - The Storybook Capital of America - hosted our 12th annual Children’s Arts + Literacy Festival celebrating the works of author and illustrator LeUyen Pham. Not only did Ms. Pham bring her entire family to Texas (their first time in the Lone Star State) for the entirety of the festival, but they threw themselves into all the weekend’s events, visited our local Air Force base and ate some of our best BBQ.
But LeUyen’s graciousness didn’t stop there. At book signings - she took the time to talk to each kid, to sign their book, and when possible, to even draw a quick portrait of the child. My daughters got a copy of her book “Big Sister, Little Sister” and she drew their likenesses right next to book’s illustrations that represented the author and her own big sister. [see below]
Yes, it took time. Yes, it took effort. But it didn’t take too much time or too much effort. And it cost nothing. What made these drawings special was the ♥️ behind the act. The personal touch. She looked at my girls and they were the only ones who received this gift. It was for them and them alone.
When we care for and connect with others, it doesn’t have to always be big, gigantic over-the-top tasks. It doesn’t need to be impersonal, mass actions to a large group. For customer service and stewardship to really hit, it needs to be personalized and authentic. We need to look the people in the eyes and give them a gift that only we can give and that was made just for them. That can be a gift of service, of a kind word, of a handwritten note or even of a picture.
It just needs to be for them and them alone.
