Just in time for #ClimateWeekNYC ! I am excited to share a new brief that my colleague Mollie Stegeman and I published on the importance of proactive planning to mitigate the escalating costs of climate stress on aging infrastructure. As climate impacts intensify, the need for strategic investments and forward-thinking policies becomes even more critical. Our research highlights the benefits of early intervention and the potential savings for states that prioritize resilience in their infrastructure planning. Check out the full article to learn more about how early planning can make a significant difference and examples of states that are applying this forward looking approach to their capital budgeting practices: https://lnkd.in/efPEGD9A #NYCClimateWeek #Climateweek #ClimateChange #Infrastructure #Sustainability #Statebudgets #publicfinance #Resilience

Annex 9: Quarterly Webinar featuring Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada and Climate Insight You are invited to an upcoming webinar featuring speakers from Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada and Local Governments for Sustainability, who will be introducing Canada's new Climate Toolkit for Housing and Infrastructure. This webinar will be particularly interesting for those working on climate resilience and infrastructure (especially in the Great Lakes region) as well as those working with climate data. See event poster for further details. What you can expect from this webinar: * Introduction to a suite of tools that help infrastructure owners and decision-makers build resilience on Canada's path to net-zero emissions. Services include a Climate Help Desk, the ClimateInsight.ca platform, and a Roster of Climate and Infrastructure Experts. * You will have an opportunity to ask questions about your specific projects. There will also be an open discussion on trends and needs in your sector. Following the 1-hour webinar, participants are invited to remain online to join the Annex 9 Extended Subcommittee meeting from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. ET. You will hear updates from Annex 9, which represents Climate Change under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. There will also be a chance for you to share a brief summary of Great Lakes climate change projects you are working on. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gwUsV3aS

Research from Transportation For America finds that 32 out of 50 states are spending federal dollars in ways that worsen climate outcomes, increase traffic, and add to our maintenance needs. "Despite positive messaging and attempted guidance, most states are not using funding in ways that will put us on track to avoid the worst consequences of climate change." >> Whether urban or rural, entrenching car dependence increases emissions Excellent summary, one of the better data-driven articles I've encounter on this subject. As climate stressors intensify, states are taking innovative approaches to financing critical infrastructure resilience projects. My teammate Elijah Gullett and I examined a few states' recent efforts to leverage tools like resilience bonds, public-private partnerships, and federal funding to address vulnerabilities in transportation and water systems. These strategies are paving the way for long-term sustainability and preparedness. Check out our latest article here: https://lnkd.in/gFivf4H2 We'd love to hear your thoughts—what innovative financing strategies have you seen or worked on in your states? #Infrastructure #ClimateResilience #StatePolicy #PublicFinance #Innovation #FinanceFridays

"Local communities, states and federal agencies need to reexamine the growing threats from aging infrastructure in a warming world and find new solutions. That doesn’t just mean new engineering designs – it means thinking differently about governance, planning and financing, and societal goals." NY Governor Kathy Hochul Releases SFY 2025-26 Executive Budget New York Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled her SFY 2025-26 Executive Budget this week, and there were a number of environmental proposals. Some of these intersect with the priorities of the NYS Center of Excellence (CoE) in Healthy Water Solutions, and we will be monitoring for research, development, and partnership opportunities. The most pertinent include: Sustainable Future Program Slated for $1 billion According to the budget proposal, New York State will dedicate $1 billion to addressing climate change and its impacts, proposing the largest-ever climate investment in New York State history to “fuel the state’s continued economic growth and job creation.” This funding will be used for climate mitigation and adaptation projects, including creating and utilizing renewable energy; advancing clean transportation initiatives; for the design, construction, repair, or improvement of green infrastructure; and for other priorities identified in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act Scoping Plan. Clean Water Infrastructure The Executive Budget would add $500 million to support clean water infrastructure, raising the State's total investment to $6 billion. This funding will support local construction projects to improve municipal drinking water distribution, filtration systems, and wastewater treatment. An additional $108 million is proposed to build climate resiliency, including $78 million for coastal resiliency and $30 million in Green Resiliency Grants. While its clear that climate change and carbon emissions are NOT a focus of West Virginia's elected majority, coming in 9th in per capita increases in CO2 emissions from Department of Highways projects isn't somewhere we should be. To protect WV's natural assets we should be using proven options in transportation funding that move people better, cleaner, and focusing on maintaining our infrastructure not expanding it when we aren't able to cover the costs of maintenance. https://lnkd.in/gi8qynb8
