Just in time for #ClimateWeekNYC ! I am excited to share a new brief that my colleague Mollie Stegeman and I published on the importance of proactive planning to mitigate the escalating costs of climate stress on aging infrastructure. As climate impacts intensify, the need for strategic investments and forward-thinking policies becomes even more critical. Our research highlights the benefits of early intervention and the potential savings for states that prioritize resilience in their infrastructure planning. Check out the full article to learn more about how early planning can make a significant difference and examples of states that are applying this forward looking approach to their capital budgeting practices: https://lnkd.in/efPEGD9A #NYCClimateWeek #Climateweek #ClimateChange #Infrastructure #Sustainability #Statebudgets #publicfinance #Resilience

Research from Transportation For America finds that 32 out of 50 states are spending federal dollars in ways that worsen climate outcomes, increase traffic, and add to our maintenance needs. "Despite positive messaging and attempted guidance, most states are not using funding in ways that will put us on track to avoid the worst consequences of climate change." >> Whether urban or rural, entrenching car dependence increases emissions Excellent summary, one of the better data-driven articles I've encounter on this subject. While its clear that climate change and carbon emissions are NOT a focus of West Virginia's elected majority, coming in 9th in per capita increases in CO2 emissions from Department of Highways projects isn't somewhere we should be. To protect WV's natural assets we should be using proven options in transportation funding that move people better, cleaner, and focusing on maintaining our infrastructure not expanding it when we aren't able to cover the costs of maintenance. https://lnkd.in/gi8qynb8

Here's a possibility inspired by the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation’s Request for Expressions of Interest, we envision a dynamic shared facility like The Green Launchpad to foster innovation in sustainable technologies. The Green Launchpad is a collaborative hub within the Brooklyn Navy Yard designed to nurture startups specializing in sustainable technologies. Sponsored by leading industry corporations and supported by public funding, this facility offers a range of shared resources from manufacturing spaces to R&D labs. Startups begin in the Green Launchpad with access to shared resources, reducing initial costs and fostering collaboration. As companies mature, they move on, making room for new ventures. This cycle nurtures a continuous flow of innovation and job creation in the Yard, supporting the local economy and advancing environmental sustainability. This model promotes not only economic growth and innovation in green technologies but also serves as an educational platform for the next generation, tying closely with the Yard’s mission of sustainable community development. This hub could accommodate around 10-15 startups, potentially creating 100-300 jobs, which would invigorate the local economy and boost job creation in green industries. **Financing the Vision: ** The development of such a hub could be supported through a mix of industry sponsorships, government grants, and public-private partnerships, enabling a robust platform for startups to innovate with reduced financial barriers. This concept, inspired by the Brooklyn RFEI, illustrates the immense potential for similar initiatives globally, offering a blueprint for how industries could collaborate to nurture eco-friendly innovations and sustainable community development. Community Engagement: Startups at the Green Launchpad would collaborate with the Brooklyn STEAM Center and other local educational programs to offer internships, training, and workshops, thereby fostering a pipeline of talent and reinforcing community ties. This integration ensures ongoing benefits for the local economy and enhances the social fabric of the area through innovative, environmentally focused projects. This is merely one idea of how spaces like these could be transformed to meet the needs of tomorrow's green economy. It's definitely a great opportunity for industries and local government to make a difference in climate and infrastructure!
Attention All Climate Solutions and Infrastructure Businesses! In response to the pressing climate crisis, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) issued a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for the development and operation of a 2.75-acre parcel on the Brooklyn waterfront for clean energy infrastructure or the production of technology addressing climate change. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation has a 130,000 sq ft parcel that is a prime location for clean energy infrastructure or the manufacture of products to address climate change. BNYDC is seeking to learn more about potential projects for the Site with these uses. Climate change is one of society’s most pressing global issues and one that requires the development, production and deployment of a significant amount of “devices” of varying sizes and scales (i.e. heat pumps, solar panels, electric vehicle chargers, transmission stations, battery energy storage systems, to name a few). BNYDC has a rare opportunity to redevelop the Site to provide critically needed clean energy infrastructure and/or establish industrial space that will develop products addressing climate change and create jobs in New York City’s emerging “green economy.” Tour dates listed on the RFEI. We need infrastructure that returns multiple benefits for every dollar we spend. Like the global projects highlighted in the latest Climate Resilient Infrastructure Report from the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI). We're honored to have two Trust for Public Land projects in the report - A Focus on Nature. See Rodney Cook Park in Atlanta and PS 38K in Brooklyn among the standout global examples of nature-based infrastructure creating healthier, more resilient communities. #resilience #natureforclimate #climateadaptation #climateequity https://lnkd.in/ecYRQU-w

The increasing frequency and severity of climate disasters highlight the urgent need for nations to invest in resilient infrastructure. The current rate of investment is insufficient to address the challenges posed by rising temperatures and extreme weather events. Three key factors influence infrastructure resilience: awareness of risks, designing for climate disruption, and financial incentives. Encouraging infrastructure investment can be achieved through user-based methods, tax-based incentives, and value-capture schemes. Collaboration among governments and public-private partnerships is crucial for identifying risks, determining solutions, and proactively investing in resilience. Developed economies must lead the way in funding and innovation to ensure sustainable development and resilience. #climatechange #Resilience #ppp
