It’s World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week! At the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), addressing public health challenges like AMR has always been a priority. Through research, education, and advocacy, NIMR works tirelessly to fight communicable diseases and raise awareness about AMR. Similarly, NIMR Foundation is dedicated to turning research into practical solutions. We are committed to educating, advocating, and spreading the word about AMR, ensuring everyone understands its importance. Recently, The Institut Mérieux, in partnership with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), recently introduced an initiative to support promising young researchers in Nigeria working on Antimicrobial Resistance. Through grants and awards, this partnership provides funding to enable high impact research projects, fostering innovation and progress in the fight against AMR. We are spreading awareness about AMR through research, campaigns, and collaborations. Together, we can protect the health of our communities and the world. Join us in the fight against AMR. #nimr #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth #ResearchForImpact #StopSuperbugs #HealthInnovation #AMRAwareness #NIMRFoundation #ProtectHealth #AMRResearch #SaveLives #PreventAMR

🌍💊 Tackling the #Silent #Pandemic: Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) We were very interested to follow the crucial debate on #AMR at the #PoliticoHealthcare Summit 2024. The session comes in the middle of the #World #AMR #Awareness #Week and underscored the urgent need for global action to address AMR, a crisis predicted to cause 40 million deaths in the coming years. 🗝 Key takeaways: 1️⃣ AMR Targets Are Not Being Met: While progress is evident, regions like Europe must accelerate national action plans and boost innovation in diagnostics and treatments. 2️⃣ Patient-Centric Policies: Patient organizations are vital in shaping effective policies and raising awareness. 3️⃣ Global Investment Required: From new drugs and clean water to prevention and healthcare workforce stewardship, sustained funding is essential to reduce the future costs of AMR. 4️⃣ Innovative Financial Models: Countries exploring subscription models and public-private partnerships are paving the way for a sustainable approach to combating AMR. 5️⃣ Pan-European Coordination: A united EU response, with a focus on 2025 as a year of action—not transition—is critical to keeping AMR on the political agenda. The urgency of the AMR crisis cannot be overstated, and we applaud the collaborative efforts highlighted during this summit. Let’s ensure that 2025 and beyond see tangible progress in addressing this global health threat. #AMR #HealthAwareness #Antibiotics #GlobalHealth #Prevention #AMR #PatientVoices #HealthcareInnovation #EAAD #AntimicrobialResistance #KeepAntibioticsWorking #AMRPatientGroup #PatientsFirst #EUHealthcare #WAAW2024 European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) DG SANTE European Commission European Patients' Forum Anca Toma Health First Europe European Medicines Agency World Health Organization (WHO) Active Citizenship Network AMR Patient Alliance Antibiotic Research UK AVEC France European Forum for Primary Care (EFPC) European Lung Foundation Fondazione The Bridge International Alliance of Patients' Organizations (IAPO) NGO Karkinaki Awareness for Childhood and Adolescent Cancer Health Consultancy Network (Malta) Patients for Patient Safety Foundation PELVIC PAIN SUPPORT NETWORK Associazione Respiriamo Insieme The AMR Narrative The Patients Association UNIAMO Federazione Italiana Malattie Rare CZEPAR - Česká platforma antibiotické rezistence

A really insightful (and terrifying) report on the state of AMR tracking. To me, two things really stood out: 1. The need for more public awareness (of course, mostly among those working in health care, but I do think general awareness is important) 2. The need to fund more research on finding more antimicrobials (and this is where the public awareness and pressure on the politicians would come in!) See what I did there? Even if you don't read the full paper, you already know a bit more from just reading this post. But seriously, read it, this is important.
The first World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) report on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in over a decade reflects on global progress in tackling AMR since, considers opportunities for action, and makes policy recommendations to build on the United Nations Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance. The Fleming Initiative will have a strong presence at the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) next week, where 'Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance: How to Keep Antibiotics Working for the Next Century' will be presented. As the report's sixth recommendation highlights, we have four years before the centenary of the discovery of penicillin (2028) to accelerate progress on tackling AMR. Let's keep antibiotics working for the next 100 years! The report was co-authored by: 🔵 Lord Ara Darzi, Executive Chair of the Fleming Initiative 🔵 Dame Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on Antimicrobial Resistance 🔵 Peter Howitt, Managing Director of the Centre for Health Policy (Institute of Global Health Innovation) 🔵 Anant Pratap Singh, Medical Biosciences Student (Imperial College London) Read the report ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eSaSaDwp

In 2028 it will be 100 years since the discovery of penicillin. Now we need to respect the use of antibiotics, with improving education on its use, more diagnostic testing and improving the pull incentives for new developments #AMR A great summary below on how we need to unite globally to combat this worldwide threat

It's an ambitious target: Recommendation 4 "By 2027, high-income countries should commit to only prescribing #antibiotics (with a few defined exceptions) when need is confirmed by a diagnostic test. Low- and middle-income countries should achieve this by 2030." Perhaps what we need is a graphic that illustrates diagnostic product-market fit alongside cost and context i.e. primary care vs secondary? How many diagnostics will integrate with the current clinical workflows and what level of data linkage and interoperability is needed to be able to monitor and evaluate success? Our own Dr. Boumediene Soufi, Global AMR Program Lead, is participating in the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79), actively contributing to key sessions on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and other critical global health issues. As the global leader in generic and biosimilar medicines, #Sandoz is committed to advancing its Purpose of pioneering access for patients. Engaging in these important global discussions with key stakeholders allows us to contribute to promoting responsible antibiotic use and fostering cross-sector collaboration to tackle the global health threat posed by AMR. Together, we are working towards a future where access to affordable and high-quality medicines is ensured for all and the global healthcare community unites to combat global public health threats, particularly #AMR. #UNGA79

Yesterday some of the NCD Policy Lab partners attended the JACARDI general assembly, hosted by Santé publique France, which brought together leading experts from across Europe to advance the care and treatment of #cardiovasculardisease and #diabetes. One in six people in Europe have cardiovascular diseases, one in ten have diabetes. Research, action and translating science to policy is needed. JACARDI the Joint Action on CARdiovascular diseases and Diabetes supported by EU Health and Food Safety and coordinated by Istituto Superiore di Sanità supports European countries in reducing the burden of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, at both individual and health system levels. With #142 pilot projects exciting science and experience as well as a huge potential for impact on the health and well-being of people. The best practices and experiences shared among experts and partners during the day reaffirm the NCD Policy Lab's mission to generate evidence and foster the adoption of evidence-based policies. As we move forward, the importance of collaboration, research, action and evidence-based policy in enhancing access to medicines and technologies for NCDs is clearer than ever, underscoring our commitment to move the NCD agenda forward. #JACARDParis2024 #NCDs #Diabetes
