𝐀𝐥𝐳𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐫'𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 Some essential steps towards helping children understand what is happening when an elderly family member gets Alzheimer’s Disease include: Being ready to answer questions: while all the questions a child has about the Alzheimer’s Disease patient may not be susceptible to perfect or simple answers, honesty is important, as is a down-to-earth approach to describing what the patient’s problems are (such as difficulty remembering things, or a loss of social inhibition) while ascribing them to the underlying medical condition. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a form of dementia, is often seen in older adults and may or may not be progressive. It does not necessarily mean a precursor to full-blown dementia but could suggest that a brain function change has happened. Some common signs of MCI are forgetfulness, lost train of thought, confusion, overwhelm or impulsiveness, irritability, and aggression. Let go of formal activities and measured outcomes and do activities that fit into your loved one's daily rhythm instead. Some days will be better than others, but by focusing on things are interested in, you'll find less resistance and more room for connection.
