[IX] Transcrime @ #ASC2024 | Can #AI predict conspiracies' impact on crime levels? Thanks to #deeplearning capabilities, we are one step closer to understanding a controversial link: the potential for racially and politically charged #conspiracytheories to drive real-world #hatecrime. Transcrime's research in the EU-funded FERMI EU project, presented by Michael Victor Lo Giudice, analyses this nexus from an undervalued angle: rather than focusing on the supply of harmful content (articles, blogs and posts), we looked at its demand. In an article published by the University of Chicago, data and social scientists from the University have developed a new AI algorithm that can predict future crimes one week in advance with about 90% accuracy after analyzing patterns in time and geographic locations from public data on violent and property crimes. However, the algorithm also revealed increased police response in wealthy neighborhoods at the expense of less advantaged areas. 2. The BBC reveals how artificial intelligence is becoming a powerful tool for scammers, enabling them to clone voices and deceive people. In an eye-opening experiment, Watchdog teamed up with Professor Oliver Buckley from the University of East Anglia to show how easily one can be fooled by AI-generated voices. A diverse group of volunteers, unaware of the specifics, were recorded speaking for two minutes. Using these recordings, AI software created realistic voice replicas. The results were shocking. For instance, a mother and daughter, Sam and Amelia, were stunned by a fake voicemail from "Amelia," which triggered a strong, instinctive reaction in Sam, even though she knew it was fake. This experiment highlights the need for caution. Always verify suspicious voicemails by calling the person directly, and when posting online, use background noises to make it harder for scammers to clone your voice. Once you have reduced the concept of human intelligence to what the markets will pay for, then suddenly, all it takes to build an intelligent machine — even a superhuman one — is to make something that generates economically valuable outputs at a rate and average quality that exceeds your own economic output. Anything else is irrelevant. As the ideology behind this bait-and-switch leaks into the wider culture, it slowly corrodes our own self-understanding. According to this view, such humanistic descriptions of our most valued performances convey no added truth of their own. They point to no richer realities of what human intelligence is. As i am in the business of detecting deepfake voice clones to defend business and individuals from getting hit by those fraudsters, i am looking periodically at news and evidence of such crimes taking place and the feeling I get is that when i googled for "voice deepfake scams" 6 months ago i got couple of new articles where today i get tens and more evidence on a weekly basis. Just recently Wiz CEOs Assaf Rappaport's voice was faked by a fraudster sending a voice message to all employees in an attempt to get access to the company's systems. ⚖ So as a "numbers" person the feeling i got is backed by real evidence shown in the latest regulaforensics.com Report showing 12% rise in voice deepfake and 20% rise in video deepfake(2022-2024).
