Organizational culture is a term and idea that was popularized in the 1980s and ’90s. During this time, there was a shift in management philosophy towards recognizing the importance of the internal experience in shaping employee behavior, productivity, and overall success. Employee engagement, values-based hiring, and DEI initiatives are efforts directly connected to this philosophy. They were seen as innovative and progressive for their time. But now, we have a front-row seat to its limitations. Gallup data suggest that most organizations have yet to tap into the power of their culture. From my perspective, and as the data continues to suggest, culture work is outdated based on how we build and grow our businesses today. As we watch companies innovate in every other part of their business, it is time to shift from this decades-old approach to something built for our current and future multi-generational, nomadic, and meaning-seeking workforce.
