Exciting news for Greensea IQ! We're happy to report that we were awarded a Phase II contract from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) as part of SBIR Topic #N211-066 (for Coupled ROV and Manipulator Control). This contract, including options, is valued at $1.9 million and spans up to three years if all options are exercised. The objective of this contract is to enhance the capabilities of the MESR Mk20 Expeditionary ROV platform by integrating manipulators and providing intuitive, one-operator control of the ROV and manipulator system. This integration will allow ROVs to perform increasingly complex tasks in marine environments, using a single control system for both the ROV and manipulator. A small, specialized tool used for underwater acoustic reconnaissance and surveillance is called a sonobuoy. It is an essential tool for scientific oceanography research as well as naval and maritime operations. Usually, they are launched into the ocean from ships or airplanes. When they are deployed, they sink to a preset depth at which point they start to send out acoustic signals and gather data on underwater sound. Sonar pings, underwater communications, and background noise are a few examples of these signals. https://lnkd.in/dZSEV84W Navantia, Spain’s state-owned shipbuilding firm, has installed an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system on the Spanish Navy’s Cosme Garcia (S-83) submarine. This technology enhances the submarine’s capabilities, allowing it to stay submerged for much longer durations, reducing the need to surface and improving stealth during operations. The AIP system was developed by Navantia and tested in 2020, specifically designed to integrate with the Spanish Navy’s S-80 class submarines. The Cosme Garcia (S-83) is the first of the class to feature the AIP system, which uses bioethanol-derived hydrogen with oxygen to generate electricity via a fuel cell. This energy is then used to charge the submarine’s batteries, extending its submerged endurance to two or even three times longer than conventional diesel-electric submarines. This enhanced endurance significantly reduces the risk of detection, as the submarine can remain submerged without the need to surface for air, a process that exposes it to radar and visual detection. With the new AIP system, the Cosme Garcia can operate in a broader range of mission scenarios, making it highly advanced conventional submarines on the global market today, according to the press release. The AIP technology, which operates effectively at any depth, offers a substantial strategic advantage, particularly during extended underwater missions. The Spanish Navy plans to equip its remaining S-80 class submarines, including the Isaac Peral (S-81) and Narciso Monturiol (S-82), with the AIP system in the near future. As stated by the press release, the S-80 class, which includes the recently commissioned S-80 Plus submarines, is unique in being the only 3,000-ton submarines worldwide to feature AIP. With these improvements, Navantia’s AIP system may soon be available for international markets. Leonardo announced the signing of a definitive agreement to sell its Underwater Armaments Systems (UAS) business line to FINCANTIERI for an Enterprise Value consideration comprising a fixed component amounting to € 300 million, subject to the usual price adjustment mechanisms, plus a variable component of up to € 115 million subject to the achievement of certain 2024 performance targets, making for a total Enterprise Value up to €415 million. Closing of the transaction is expected at the beginning of 2025 and is subject to the usual customary regulatory approval. Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei S.p.A., a historic 100% subsidiary of Leonardo, was founded as a company specialising in the construction of submarine defence systems and in particular torpedoes, countermeasures and sonars.
