The 20th Anniversary of the EU’s Eastern Enlargement and Europe’s Future German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) 2 May 2024 #Ukraine #EU #ForeignPolicy On the 20th anniversary of the “big bang” enlargement of the EU in 2004, our panel reflects on Europe’s past and look into its future. The panel discusses lessons learned by the ten member states admitted then and by Germany. The panel also assesses the next stage of EU enlargement, which includes both Ukraine and “older” candidate countries of the Western Balkans. While Europe’s future and security are closely interlinked with further enlargement, frictions among the current member states are affecting the EU’s internal reform and path to further integration. Europe Day is a poignant reminder of our shared achievements and the challenges that lie ahead. This year, as Europe faces crucial times, your support and active participation are more important than ever. Let us use this opportunity to strengthen our commitment to a thriving and united Europe. We also look towards the forthcoming European elections from June 6th to 9th, which are pivotal in shaping the future direction of our Union. Let us all remember that the European Union as we know it did not come by chance, fate or historic development. It requires the active participation, power of will, creativity, strength and passion of us all to keep the European spirit alive every day and continue to develop and strengthen it to face and overcome the tremendous challenges lying ahead. The Council of the European Union brings together the leaders of the 27 EU member states to define the political priorities and direction of the EU.  But what role does it play in U.S.-EU relations? 1 May 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the accession of ten new Member States to the European Union. This greatest-ever enlargement is a symbol of the peaceful unity of the continent and - now more than ever before - our greatest geopolitical asset. This review looks back at the strengths and weaknesses brought about by the accession of 10 States, which has had a profound effect on European integration, from the reform of institutions to the reunification of the peoples of Europe - separated for too long by the Iron Curtain - not forgetting Mediterranean issues and the emergence of political figures who have punctuated the news of our Union over the last 20 years. So, it's Europe Day today. The day marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman declaration*' and the start of what is now the European Union. Some people criticise the EU for expanding, but it has not invaded anyone to do so. In fact other nations actively seek to join, and others are free to leave. It's not perfect, nothing is, but on the whole it has made the lives of EU citizens, and those of close nations, better, and has also been a force for good across the globe. Law and order, regulations and rules may be boring, but they also set the framework for good things to happen. * the Schuman declaration on 9 May 1950 set out ideas for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. Robert Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
