Anyone who thinks that wind power has nothing to do with heavy engineering and manufacturing should take a moment to look at this turbine nacelle: the giant GE Haliade-X 13MW turbines for the 1.2GW Dogger Bank A project, worth £11 billion, will eventually supply enough power for six million UK homes. Had we had governments with foresight to reinvest the tax take for oil and gas in clean energy, we could have promoted the development of indigenous turbine manufacturing for the emerging large scale and floating wind farms as America, Denmark, Sweden and Norway are doing to great effect. Our Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult is doing some great work in this field with a limited budget, including supporting GE with the testing of its huge turbines. Unlike Scandinavian countries, who have invested oil and gas revenues in renewable R&D, the UK today finds itself being the home to the world’s largest offshore wind farms, while others design, manufacture and sell us the hugely valuable equipment. It’s not too late to learn from our mistakes and initiate a national programme to build turbine and blade technologies. The European Commission estimates that offshore wind must generate as much as 450 GW by 2050 for Europe to become climate neutral. Total global capacity from offshore wind is currently 23 GW, which means that production will need to increase twelvefold. That is a very valuable market; being a maker rather than taker in this market is critical to out economic and energy resilience.

Siemens Gamesa blade breaks at Swedish wind farm A blade has broken on a Siemens Gamesa turbine at a large wind farm in Sweden owned by Enlight Renewable Energy and Prime Capital’s Prime Green Infrastructure Fund (PGEIF). The damage occurred on Sunday 3 November to a turbine blade at the 372MW Bjornberget array. According to a statement by the owners, no one was injured and a safety zone has been established around the machine in question. “We urge everyone visiting the area to respect the closures to avoid the risk of personal injury,” stated Enlight Renewable Energy and Prime Capital’s PGEIF. They added: “An investigation is underway into what caused the incident and we are in ongoing contact with the relevant stakeholders and authorities.” Bjornberget is located 10km south-east of Ange and consists of 60 turbines. The units are from Siemens Gamesa’s 5MW-plus onshore platform. Construction began in 2021, followed by commissioning in 2023. Swedish renewable energy firm NoviOcean has developed a groundbreaking Hybrid Energy Converter (HEC) that harnesses wave, wind, and solar energy to power over 1,000 homes daily. The 38-meter raft, equipped with wind turbines and solar panels, generates about 1 MW with a 40% capacity factor. This will reduce the cost of electrical grid connections and make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gases. The green hydrogen produced can also be converted into synthetic fuels and other energy sources. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴? The construction and planning of wind energy plants, as well as electrolysers, can be difficult and the plants should run as efficiently as possible. Many of our bleeding and venting valves are in use in wind farms in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea ensuring that the wind turbines run smoothly. NORDEX SECURES FIRST WIND ORDER IN MONTENEGRO Nordex Group has secured its first wind turbine order in Montenegro. The public utility Elektroprivreda Crne Gore AD Nikšić has commissioned eight N163/6.X turbines for the Gvozd Wind Farm, which will have a total capacity of 55 MW. Scheduled for delivery starting November 2025, the wind farm is expected to be operational by spring 2026. This project represents a major advancement for Montenegro's energy sector, as the Gvozd Wind Farm will account for over 30% of the nation’s installed wind power capacity upon completion. The turbines will be mounted on 113 metre towers and are designed to operate at a nominal output of 7 MW each. As commonly accepted in the renewables sector, for efficient energy production there is a strong need for efficient, reliable, and long-lasting wind turbines. As previously detailed in the 4th issue of PES Wind Magazine in 2023, Bladena initiated the “Owners Requirements - Phase 2” (OR-P2) project in early 2024. This initiative aims to support the industry towards optimal operational efficiency through collaborative efforts with wind turbine owners (WTOs) and manufacturers (OEMs). As turbines, and their components such as the blades, grow larger, blade failures in the early stages of their lifetime have raised serious concerns. Ensuring robustness and reliability is essential for optimal operational performance. The primary objective of OR-P2 is to close the gap between current industry blade certification requirements and operational conditions. By challenging the current IEC certification processes, the project seeks optimized assessments to enhance blade quality, robustness, and performance, consequently increasing overall reliability—and improving outcomes for all stakeholders. The OR-P2 project thoroughly investigates current design and testing methodologies, moreover, providing actionable insights. This initiative encourages the industry to implement additional, more representative certification requirements in order to ensure higher blade reliability. So far 8 WTOs have decided to join, namely Engie, Shell Global Solutions, Iberdrola, ScottishPower, SR Energy, TOWII, OX2 and another large WTO who wish to remain unnamed at the current stage. With the support of this very strong WTO group, Bladena has initiated discussions with OEMs, test centers, and certification bodies to seek a common understanding of current requirements, how could we achieve a higher reliability level, and joint ownership of the additional requirements.
