MINING LEADERS COMMIT TO SUPPORT A NATURE POSITIVE FUTURE In a post that I published several days ago I stated that "a successful energy transition can only be achieved if we deal adequately with unsustainable and irresponsible mining practices which threaten to perpetuate environmental degradation and social inequalities." With this message still resonating in my head, I came across a very inspiring position statement today that was recently (Jan. 17) made by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) regarding the need to take urgent action to halt and reverse nature loss, which is vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and reaching global decarbonization targets. "With responsibly produced minerals and metals playing a critical role in advancing global sustainable development goals, ICMM members, representing a third of the global industry, have pledged that meeting this demand for critical materials must not be at the expense of nature. Our Nature: Position Statement signifies a collective promise to contribute to a nature positive future across our areas of influence." ‘Nature positive by 2030’ refers to halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030 from a 2020 baseline, through measurable gains in the health, abundance, diversity and resilience of species, ecosystems, and natural processes. ICMM's new commitments have been set out in a 5-point plan for nature: * Protect and conserve pristine areas of our natural environment: No mining or exploration in World Heritage Sites and respect all legally designated protected areas. * Halt biodiversity loss at our operations: Achieve at least no net loss of biodiversity at all mine sites by closure against a 2020 baseline. * Collaborate across value chains: Develop initiatives and partnerships that halt and reverse nature loss throughout supply and distribution chains. * Restore and enhance landscapes: Around operations through local partnerships, including with Indigenous Peoples, land-connected peoples and local communities. * Catalyse wider change: Acting to change the fundamental systems that contribute to nature loss and fostering opportunities for nature’s recovery. This is the kind of leadership the industry requires in these challenging times.  And these are the type of commitments that help me remember why I joined the industry in the first place. Many claim that #DeepSeaMining will be necessary for the green transition. However, the expansion of mining activities into deep-sea areas of unparalleled fragility and biodiversity, where impacts are high and potentially irreversible, is a false solution. Instead, a clean energy future requires increased investment in circular economy strategies, new battery technology, and recycling. We must reduce cumulative mineral demand significantly to prevent the destruction of critical ecosystems. Mining, including artisanal #mining, is prominent at #cop16. Some key industry leaders, experts and organizations that are participating include Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) Patrick Schein Marcin Piersiak Gina D'Amato ICMM Aidan Davy Mining Association of Canada Pierre Gratton Church of England Pension Board Laura Hillis. Mining is about land use at core, directly affecting #biodiversity. In artisanal mining, good practices change outcomes, with Forest Smart Standards outlining what these look like. Along with biodiversity, professionalization in artisanal mining fundamentally changes the dignity and productivity of work, delivering a range of outcomes that include poverty alleviation, #sustainabledevelopment, increased #criticalminerals supply, enhanced #humanrights protections. Capital at scale is needed to deliver artisanal mining prifessionalization at scale. Excellent article about the ecological consequences of the rush to mine the deep seabed for resources needed for "green" technologies. As we stand at the brink of this new frontier, we must choose a path that reflects our responsibility to the planet and future generations. "Our current trajectory – one of endless extraction and consumption – is both unsustainable and morally indefensible. Instead of plunging into the abyss in search of resources, we need to cultivate a culture that values quality over quantity, repair over replacement, and conservation over consumption.   The call to action is clear: we urgently need bold policies with ambitious material footprint reduction targets to shift business as usual."

The Minamata Convention committed to phase out #mercury in #mining a decade ago. 🏹 85% of artisanal #gold miners use mercury today 🏹 #asgm produces 37% of 🌍 mercury emissions Why does this matter? 🏹 mercury is a neurotoxin - it gets into the water and soil, inevitably into plants, animals and people - mercury is a #biodiversity and a human health scourge How can this be improved? 🏹 shifting away from mercury, or in the interim toward less harmful approaches around mercury, happens through capacity development 🏹 shifting to benign alternatives comes in the context of broader professionalization - education, capacity development, good practices, equipment 🏹 mercury is cheap, which means that miners who are relatively impoverished need to trust the value of transitioning Where to from here? 🏹 the #cop16 biodiversity convention starts next Monday in Colombia. Recognizing the biodiversity impacts of mercury is a start, engaging in formalization at scale that builds capacity and changes outcomes is a solution. Formalization increases productivity / financial value, while delivering social, environmental and economic gains that range from poverty alleviation to biodiversity to #sustainabledevelopment. 🌍🌿 It’s World Environment Day! 🌿🌍 Today, 27 organisations published a powerful statement in the Sydney Morning Herald urging PM Albanese to support a global ban on deep sea mining. Deep sea mining is a destructive new industry that poses an unacceptable risk to the ocean and marine life. Dredging and mining the ocean floor for corporate profit is dangerous and reckless, and won't solve the climate crisis. The lives of millions of people across Australia and the Pacific are intrinsically entwined with the ocean, a connection spanning many thousands of years. The ocean sustains our communities with food, livelihoods and our unique way of life. Oceans support an incredible diversity of life and ecosystems, from coral reefs to kelp forests. 25 countries across the world including six Pacific states have already said no to deep sea mining. The joint statement asks Albanese to show leadership on ocean protection and stand with our Pacific family by supporting a moratorium on deep sea mining in international waters before the International Seabed Authority meets in July. Happy World Environment Day! This year's theme focuses on "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience," crucial areas where the mining industry can make a significant impact. According to UNEP, land restoration boosts livelihoods, lowers poverty and builds resilience to extreme weather. Restoring just 15 per cent of land and halting further conversion could avoid up to 60 per cent of expected species extinctions. Mining organisations are also leading the way in environmental stewardship. Jens-Peter Lux, Managing Director of DMT, the host of the MiningForum, comments on this year's motto "For a #Sustainable Future". In view of global challenges such as climate change, energy transition, digitsation and scarcity of resources, he emphasises the paramount importance of sustainable raw materials.   We must work together to find solutions that enable us to make the raw materials sector more sustainable. This means promoting responsible mining practices, protecting the environment, respecting the rights of local communities, educating civil society about necessities and dependencies, excellent corporate governance, and sharing the value we create in a fair way. The #MiningForum provided a platform for exchange between international experts from politics, business and science.
