In the struggle against the technician shortage, one area of improvement is technician retainment. “The bottom line is, I don’t hate what I do, but there are better ways to make a living,” said Brandon Harmatiuk, sr. master technician at Subaru. “The amount of effort it takes to become an elite technician applied to a different career could probably get you more freedom and better comp." There are several potential reasons for technician disillusionment, including unpopular flat-rate payment structures, work-life balance (or lack thereof), and a lack of mentorship in the industry. Tasks becomes more strenuous and tiring when the necessary tools fitting for the job is not available. Without the right tools, efforts, strength, expertise and even the best of techniques would struggle to deliver exceptional experience. No matter how savvy a process technician is, it is impossible to deploy the usage of an hammer to a task best fit for a spanner. It can only result to downtime and low productivity. Conversely, applying the right tools to execute a task does not only excuse you from the seemingly difficult challenge and safety risks but also make task execution relatively easier and enjoyable with no cause for downtime. By this reminder, I want to reiterate the importance of applying right tools to execute task, so as to remain happy, safe and motivated while discharging your duty. Reach out to your supervisors and or uplines for help or clarity on allocation of the right tools.

🚗 Recently, I visited a car service center for a quick wash and found myself in a bit of a rush. My car ended up with a new team member, while a more experienced technician was taking a break. Initially concerned about time, I approached the senior technician to expedite the process. What followed was a valuable lesson in perspective. The new team member took his time, meticulously ensuring every detail was covered and validated. On the other hand, the experienced technician, while efficient, occasionally overlooked finer points. This experience shifted my thinking on the importance of learning attitudes versus sheer experience. While experience is undoubtedly valuable, attitude and a willingness to learn are equally crucial. Clients may initially value experience, but they ultimately appreciate individuals who show dedication, thoroughness, and a commitment to continuous improvement. #LearningAttitude #ContinuousImprovement #CustomerService #CareerGrowth

Does this technician look happy? He absolutely dont. The every day stress that a technician has to be addressed. Or you will have a revolving door in your dealership. But, let's take a look at the situation. Time is money. And technicians pay a lot of money for tools which creates more stress. They aren't getting a return on their investment. That combined with the every day stress, and the body aches makes it look like a tough situation for them, and the Service Manager. Here is my tip of the day. It worked great for me. The tech who can perform the repair the quickest needs that job. And every one of those jobs. Too many cars? Rank the technicians on a scale. If the quickest tech isn't available, work the list from the top down. Before you know it, you have a shop full of producing technicians. Then everyone is happy.
