Product Leaders ➡ ➡ What can we learn from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's new Wind Tunnel partnership? A LOT it turns out. But first, I implore you to just revel in how cool this simulation of air speed over a wing is 😉. Lesson #1 ➡ Collaboration gets big complex things done faster. Partners are sharing data and NASA researchers say that this collaboration is dramatically speeding up discoveries that would take individual partners 10 years to do solo. Lesson #2 ➡ The POWER of being able to visualize the system. One look at this simulation and even the lay person can visualize the air speed and turbulent eddies in airflow. That allows for great questions like "is there a way to correct?" or "is the heat of the engine contributing to the disrupted flow in that part of the wing?". I am always surprised at how many product leaders have zero instrumentation or visualization of work, flow, strategy to execution. Lesson #3 ➡ The savings from investing in an "engineering system". NASA figures that having a digital twin to model these kinds of systems could save the aviation industry millions of dollars in R&D costs and lead to better testing outcomes. And yet, I only see maybe 10 companies investing enough in end-to-end engineering systems to do the same with their software development. Maybe now that Gartner has named a "thing" with #platformengineering and #idp, other companies might see the benefit of investing here.
