Did you know you can snorkel to contribute to science and conservation? Monitoring unique species Snorkelling is an accessible way for us to monitor unique marine species like vulnerable dugongs and endangered sea turtles as we work toward conserving their populations. Surveys It’s not only marine animals we keep an eye on, our participants in different marine conservation programs also use snorkelling as a way to monitor coral reefs, seagrass beds and more. Ensuring these environments are in tip-top shape for the species that rely on them and the well-being of the ocean. Data collection During surveys and species monitoring, we also take the opportunity to collect data. These findings are studied and used to steer long-term conservation efforts. Discover how you can contribute to marine conservation through snorkelling: https://lnkd.in/d-qnjYgx #snorkelling #marineconservation #gvi #travelabroad #internabroad #conservation

One of the restoration projects we support in Ecuadro (Yanacocha Reserve) as part of our carbon reduction strategies...
Turn on your speakers to immerse yourself in the sounds of this Tawny Antpitta's home! From the Yanacocha Reserve, this bird swings by to say hello! This endangered species calls the tropical forests of Ecuador home, one of the world's most threatened ecosystems. This region hosts an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, including species found nowhere else on Earth. Let’s continue to drive and support these restoration efforts, together with Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco, by investing in our projects. A special thanks to Efrain Cepeda for capturing this video in the Yanacocha Reserve, with the support of Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco. #GreenFutureProject #GFP #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #Nature #Planet #ForestProtection #WildNature #Ecuador #Animals

The Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRAs) of New Zealand and Pacific Islands are official! We recently announced 179 ISRAs, 2 candidate ISRA, and 50 Areas of Interest. This is the outcome of the combined effort of contributors to #putsharksonthemap. The ISRA Criteria were successfully applied to map critical habitats for sharks, rays, and chimaeras! A huge thank you to everyone who contributed, as well as the independent review panel! Now, these can be used as a tool for various #marineconservation/management approaches - #sharks are most often completely overlooked. Check them out on the ISRA e- Atlas: https://Inkd.in/etFF6WCA There are also Factsheets for each area detailing the importance of the area for the shark species within them! We are currently finalising proposals for the Sourh American Atlantic and South American Inland Waters regions...! During the past year, I have placed trail cameras in various regions of Portugal to study the diversity of wildlife across different habitats. One of the most exciting observations I made was the thriving Otter population in the Ocreza River, in the Castelo Branco area. "As a semi-aquatic top predator, the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) is sensitive to water quality and is therefore considered as the bioindicator species and flagship species for freshwater ecosystem conservation (Ruiz-Olmo et al., 1998;Bifolchi and Lodé, 2005;Bedford, 2009)" This discovery underscores the critical importance of preserving healthy ecosystems for otters and numerous other species that depend on these habitats. #RewildingPortugal #LontraPortugal #ProtegerAsLontras #WildlifePortugal #BiodiversidadePortugal #ConservaçãoPortugal #ProtegerANatureza

🌍✨ World Migratory Bird Day: Celebrating the Majestic Trumpeter Swan 🦢✨🌍 Today, on World Migratory Bird Day, we turn our attention to one of the most graceful and resilient species of the avian world—the Trumpeter Swan. These magnificent birds, once on the brink of extinction, are a symbol of hope, conservation success, and the interconnectedness of ecosystems across North America. Did you know? 🦢 Trumpeter Swans are the heaviest living bird native to North America, with a wingspan of up to 10 feet! 🦢 Once thought to be nearly extinct in the early 20th century, conservation efforts have helped the population recover. Today, their numbers are steadily growing, thanks to dedicated wildlife enthusiasts and organizations. 🦢 You can spot them in areas like Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and even in parts of the Howe Sound Biosphere Region. Join us in celebrating the Trumpeter Swan and all migratory birds this World Migratory Bird Day. Together, we can ensure that future generations will continue to witness the incredible migrations of these iconic species. 🦢💚 #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #TrumpeterSwan #Conservation #MigratoryBirds #WetlandProtection #HoweSoundBiosphereRegion

🦎Discovered in 1986 and formally described in 2009, the Galápagos pink land iguana is one of the most endangered creatures in the world. With only around 300 individuals left, this stunning, pink-striped reptile calls the slopes of Isabela Island's Wolf Volcano home. In the latest conservation efforts (Sept. 26–Oct. 4, 2024), a team of scientists and park rangers monitored the pink iguana population and found just 8 individuals — 5 females, 2 males, and 1 young iguana. The discovery of only 1 juvenile highlights the urgent need to protect their fragile habitat. Classified by the IUCN, the pink iguana faces risks from invasive species, particularly feral cats, which prey on the young iguanas. Efforts are underway to control invasive species and protect the iguana’s tiny range of just 25 sq. km on Wolf Volcano. The new IUCN report on the global conservation status of sharks, rays and chimaeras has just been published!! https://lnkd.in/d_5i8biG A giant effort of 353 contributors to compile the most up-to-date information on shark and ray species, fisheries, trade, threats and policies. Many thanks to editors for putting together this important and impactful document! It was great to contribute to the section on #SãoTomé and #Príncipe alongside 14 national and international co-authors: ⬇️ 🦈 Data collected by Fauna & Flora , Fundação Príncipe , Oikos - Cooperação e Desenvolvimento, and #MARAPA contributed to this report! These organisation are working to establish a network of MPAs in São Tomé and Príncipe (www.rede-ampstp.com), with funding by Blue Action Fund and #Arcadia. It's great to see how the conservation monitoring done during this project has provided the first-ever glimpse into the status of sharks and rays in the country! If you want to know more, the #BRUVS data we used has just been published (see https://lnkd.in/dVVWV3Pt) and the fisheries monitoring data will be published soon! 🦈 Data collected by Vasco Pissarra as part of his PhD and the project Ngandú has also contributed to this section! Vasco worked with artisanal fishers and traders in São Tomé and Príncipe, using social methods to understand uses, value chain, and fisher's perceptions on sharks. Some of this work has recently been published! (see https://lnkd.in/dn2Mby6b)
BREAKING: The IUCN Species Survival Commission Shark Specialist Group has released a new report on the global conservation status of sharks and their relatives. This report represents the most up-to-date information from more than 158 countries and territories, and is the work of a team of 353 international scientific and conservation experts. In the 20 years since the first status report (2005), much has changed for sharks, rays and chimaeras. The breadth of research topics has expanded, mirroring the inclusion of a greater diversity of species, and attention is being trained on the emerging threats and the accelerating global changes to aquatic ecosystems. The report also highlights emerging threats and policy solutions. There are chapters for each major global region, and if you are a journalist writing about this report, we have experts from your region standing by to answer your questions. We also have a variety of high-quality images for journalists' use. We will be posting highlights throughout the week.
