Today we welcome the 4,000th follower on our LinkedIn account. This is Wasaline For Newcomers: 💡 We operate the route between Vaasa and Umeå, a lifeline between Finland and Sweden since 1948. The route was on the brink of closure in the early 2010s, before our company was founded to rescue and rebuild it. 💡 The arrival of Aurora Botnia in 2021 is a huge milestone for us. She has truly been a gem! Freight operators appreciate abundant capacity and short lead times, while passengers love the atmosphere on board. Reliable she is, too. 💡 Both the ferry and our services have been awarded the Key Flag, the symbol of Finnish work. Aurora Botnia is over 80% domestic made. 💡 We move fast in our sustainability efforts and turn them into tangible services. For example, we can allocate biogas or battery power to make certain transports emission-neutral. 💡 For any maritime company, this is truly a fascinating place and time to exist. In Finland, the EnergyVaasa cluster is pushing world-class maritime technology to the market. On the Swedish side, the Västerbotten region makes pioneering investments to infrastructure, logistics and renewable energy. We're glad to see you "on board", stay tuned for more! #maritimeindustry

Reflecting on Posidonia 2024: navigating towards a sustainable maritime future 🚢 It’s been fourteen days since Posidonia Events, an important international maritime gathering held biannually in Athens, Greece ended. At Posidonia, the event's main themes included maritime technologies, ship management, the offshore industry, and marine transport services. 🌐 The current global system relies heavily on the shipping industry to transfer materials, parts, and goods around the world. According to the International Chamber of Shipping, around 11 billion tons of goods are transported by sea each year. 🤝 The marine industry is one of Alfa Laval’s core customer segments and we collaborate with our partners, customers, and thought leaders worldwide to challenge conventional thinking on quality, efficiency, and innovation. Collaboration with our customers and partners is the key to unlocking innovative solutions for shipping's decarbonization. 🌊⚓ Hear Alfa Laval CEO Tom Erixon share his reflections about the decarbonization of the marine industry and the future solutions needed for shipowners and other partners. #AlfaLaval #PioneeringPositiveImpact #SustainableShipping

Considerations for Conducting #LCA in Real-Life Demonstrations: At Cenex Nederland, we’re conducting Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) across several Horizon Europe Innovation projects, including eBRT2030 project, EU Project AeroSolfd, and SESA Project. Each project brings unique challenges and valuable insights. A highlight from last week’s EU Project AeroSolfd GA was the discussion on measuring air quality during real-life demonstrations of retrofit solutions. Real-life testing presents complex challenges, as external factors can influence data. Yet, these measurements are essential for reliable LCA conclusions. Here are some lessons learned from an LCA perspective: - Get involved early in planning #measurement methods: Engaging at the measurement design stage helps ensure data collected aligns with LCA requirements. This proactive approach minimizes potential data gaps, securing meaningful and relevant information for robust environmental impact analysis. - Conduct thorough #data analysis to mitigate noise: Data from real-life settings often includes "noise" from external factors. Rigorous analysis is essential to filter out anomalies, validate statistical soundness, and confirm that the data represents typical scenarios. Reliable, representative data strengthens the accuracy and credibility of LCA results. - Collaborate on #scenario development: Co-developing scenarios with demonstration partners allows for consideration of multiple external and internal variables. This collaborative approach enables better coverage of real-life influences, ensuring that LCAs are both realistic and resilient across different operational conditions. Other important aspects for LCA in innovation projects include comparability with benchmarks, spatial and temporal considerations, and scaling from lab to industry. We look forward to sharing more insights and hearing your experiences with LCA in innovation projects in the weeks to come.
